Originally called Baia Formosa, or Beautiful Bay, by the early Portuguese, Plettenberg Bay is home to some of the best beaches along the Garden Route.
In the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, schools of playful dolphins and resident Orca and Bryde's whales are frequently seen, and between July and December, the migratory Southern Right whales come to the shores to calf.
The Plettenberg is a 5* Relais & Chateaux Hotel built on a rocky headland with breathtaking vistas of the sea, mountains and miles of golden sand.
There are 2 swimming pools, one of which is heated, and both give the illusion of flowing into the ocean below.
Guests can experience fabulous sightings of dolphins and whales in the bay from the hotel terraces. For the more adventurous there are numerous excursions and activities within close proximity to the hotel.
Other hotel facilities include an extensive wine cellar and a gift shop offering a unique selection of specialty items and clothing from the area.
The luxury rooms and suites offer a truly idyllic and indulgent experience. Each room is exquisitely unique and all have undercarpet heating and air-conditioning. In addition, there is the separate 2 bedroomed Beach House and 3 bedroomed Lookout Villa, ideal for those wanting more privacy or who are travelling with larger families.
The award winning restaurant has a sunny enclosed terrace, opening onto the outdoor terrace and pool providing spectacular views of the bay and the distant mountains.
There is also a Wellness Spa offering a range of treatments.

We had a fantastic holiday and we are enchanted with South Africa. The recommendations you made were wonderful. We saw plenty of whales, lots of wild animals and thought the scenery, food, wine and people were great.
Les Cascades, Franschhoek Country House, The Plettenburg and Shamwari were all superb.
All in all a great holiday and thank you for your planning and booking. First class.
