Madikwe Game Reserve

Mosetlha Bush Camp Location Map

Mosetlha is family owned and run, a rustic and intimate unfenced bush camp and eco-lodge, nestled at the very heart of the magnificent malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve, situated just 5 hours from Johannesburg, or only 3 hours from Sun City.

Covering some 76,000 hectares, Madikwe is one of the largest game reserves in South Africa, and is today regarded as one of the finest conservation areas in Africa and has taken its place as one of South Africa's top wildlife and game viewing destination.

The professional, qualified field guides will take you out into the Reserve in open 4x4 vehicles where you will have the chance to see the Big Five, the endangered wild dog, cheetah, a multitude of plains game and over 340 species of birds.

A multitude of plains game includes giraffe, zebra, kudu, gemsbok, springbok and sable. For birders, Madikwe is an unmissable destination with the latest official list boasting an incredible 340 resident and migrant bird species.

Guests are accommodated in true safari style in 9 raised wooden cabins set amongst the natural vegetation around a central camp fire and lapa area. The cabins have partly open sides and are arranged in adjoining or detached double rooms with twin beds and simple amenities.

Whilst bathrooms are not en-suite, they are essentially private – fenced toilet/shower complexes are discreetly situated amongst the cabins.

Directions For Drivers

PLEASE NOTE: The main gates open at 06:00 and close at 18:00. Guests who arrive after this time will not be allowed to self-drive to the lodge. The lodge will send a representative to escort guests to the lodge at an additional cost. SUGGESTION: Refuel at Sun Village/Zeerust as there is no fuel available inside the reserve. DO NOT follow your GPS after Zeerust/Sun City - it will take you on the wrong roads.

From Johannesburg Airport via N4 tar road: Follow the R21 north, to Pretoria (Tshwane) through Kempton Park. After 40 km follow N1 north to Pretoria (Tshwane), Pietersburg (Polokwane). After about 12 km, take N4 west into Pretoria (Tshwane), to Rustenburg or Hartebeespoort Dam. Follow the N4 to Hartebeespoort Dam.

Take the N4 to Zeerust past Brits, Rustenberg, and Swartruggens. Zeerust is approximately 220 km from Pretoria. In Zeerust turn right on the R47/R49 to Gaborone/Madikwe Game Reserve. After +/- 90 km you will see a sign on the right for the Abjaterskop Gate of the Madikwe Game Reserve.

You should be at the gate at 12:30 - please don't arrive before this time as the lodge is unable to accommodate you before then - also, if you are going to be much later than 12:30  please phone the lodge on +27 (0) 83 653 9869.

On your arrival the gate guard should give you a sheet with directions to the Meeting Point. He will also fill in a Park Entrance Permit with your details and will radio the lodge to tell them of your arrival. You do not need to pay the entrance fees at the gate - the lodge will collect the money from you on behalf of Parks Board. You will be given 2 copies of the Entrance Permit - please hand the pink copy to your Field Guide when he meets you and retain the white original for when you exit the Reserve.

In order to get to the place where you will leave your own vehicle and be met by your Mosetlha Field Guide, please continue on this main road from Abjaterskop Gate for 11 kilometres until you reach a T-junction with a signpost pointing left to 'Derdepoort Gate, Molatedi Gate' etc. Turn left here and follow this road for approximately another 2 km and, at the top of the hill, just after passing under the power lines, turn right following the sign saying 'Park Administration'.  Just 400 m further on you will come to a sliding gate in an electrified fence on your right hand side and a sign saying 'Admin Office'. Enter this gate, (please close it behind you), swing left and park at the back of the building next to the tower with the three green water tanks. Here you will be met by your Field Guide from Mosetlha.

Do not get out of your car until you reach the meeting point. You may see some wildlife on your way - if you do, slow down and maintain a good distance. Do not drive off-road in any circumstances.

From Sun City via N4 tar road: Turn right from as you leave Sun City onto the R565. After a few km you will come to a junction with the R565 to the left, and the R556 signposted straight ahead. Turn left here to keep on the R565 signposted Phokeng and Rustenberg, and it is 38 km from here to the junction with the N4 tar road.

When you reach the N4, turn right onto the road (signposted Swartruggens and Zeerust) and continue for around 130 km on this road to Zeerust. In Zeerust turn right on the R47/R49 and follow the directions as above.

From Johannesburg or Sun City via gravel roads: There is a gravel road from Sun City to Madikwe - this route is a lot shorter than the current tar road route, however as the roads are gravel and the signs to Madikwe are rather inconsistent, we would not really recommend this route to customers.

Should you wish to return to Sun City or Johannesburg using the gravel roads, the lodge will be able to supply you with a map and directions.
