Giraffe Manor

Nairobi

Giraffe Manor Location Map

Giraffe Manor is one of Nairobi’s most iconic buildings - characterful, picturesque and enveloped in history like the foliage creeping over its brickwork. Set in 12 acres of private land within 140 acres of indigenous forest in the Langata suburb of Nairobi and with verdant green gardens, sunny terraces and delightful courtyards, it harks back to the 1930s when European visitors first flocked to East Africa to enjoy safaris.

With its stately facade and elegant interior, Giraffe Manor has an extraordinary appeal. Guests remark that it’s like walking into the film Out of Africa - indeed, one of its suites is named after the author Karen Blixen.

The most fascinating thing about Giraffe Manor however is the herd of resident Rothschild giraffe. These beautiful creatures often visit morning and evening, poking their long necks into the windows in the hope of a treat, before retreating to their forest sanctuary.

The original Manor House has 6 rooms - Betty, Daisy, Jock, Lynn, Marlon and the Karen Blixen Suite (with 2 bedrooms so an ideal family option). Next door is the new Garden Manor which also has 6 rooms - Salma, Edd, Arlene, Helen, Kelly and the Finch Hatton Suite (also with 2 bedrooms - one with a double bed on the ground floor and twin beds on a mezzanie level). Although built 78 years later, using reclaimed materials from the period in which the original manor was built and its design replicates that of the main house. The Garden Manor rooms are reserved for guests staying at one of the other Safari Collection properties however.

During your stay you can stroll across the lawn to the AFEW Giraffe Centre to learn about the endangered Rothschild Giraffe or take a guided walk around the sanctuary. From Giraffe Manor, sightseeing vehicles can also take you around the Langata area.

The most fascinating thing about Giraffe Manor is not its beautiful facade or elegant interiors - it's the herd of resident Rothschild's giraffes. These beautiful creatures often visit morning and evening, poking their long necks into the windows in the hope of a treat, before retreating to their forest sanctuary.

Waking up to breakfast with a giraffe is a unique and unforgettable experience. Depending on where you are staying, you will have breakfast either in the main manor or in the Garden Manor breakfast room, but the giraffes know exactly where to find you! Watch out for their long inquisitive tongues as they investigate what’s on offer - luckily, it’s nutritious dried pellets of grass, molasses and corn that they’re after, and not pancakes and bacon!

A traditional afternoon tea at the manor is a delightful occasion not to be missed. Relax in the tranquil gardens with a giraffe or two in view, as you enjoy a tasty assortment of cookies, cakes, sandwiches, scones and fruit platters.

Included in your stay at the manor is access to the AFEW Giraffe Centre which is a gentle stroll across the front lawn of the house. The centre has some interesting background information about the rare Rothschild's giraffes and a small nature trail for stretching your legs.

Credit cards are accepted.
