Chapungu Tented Camp is located within the Thornybush Private Game Reserve, which comprises of 14,500 hectares of prime game viewing bushveld, and is home to the Big 5 as well as a variety of other African wildlife. The reserve is predominantly open savanna and with a near perfect year round climate it is the ideal safari holiday destination.

Chapungu's unmatched hospitality and superb cuisine have earned them praise from visitors who return again and again.

Each day is planned to suit the guests, with game drives in search of the Big 5, bush walks or bird watching.

The beatings of drums summon you to a delicious 5-course banquet complemented by fine South African wines, served either in the outside boma around a roaring fire under the starry sky, or in the classically appointed dining room.

The rock pool is an ideal way to cool off from the hot African sun.

This small bush camp accommodates a maximum of 16 guests in 8 air-conditioned en-suite tents.

Each safari tent is authentically furnished in colonial splendour, enhancing the ambience and comforts typical of a bygone era.

In-between game drives and bush walks, guests can relax and enjoy scenic views from the elevated deck, including the water hole, which is a major attraction with plenty of animals coming down for a drink.

Dawn and dusk shared safari game drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles; bushveld walks; all meals, tea/coffee and snacks; the Thornybush Conservation fee; and the Tourism bed levy are included.

Children Policy

Bush Walks / Walking Safaris

The final decision on whether a guest can join a guided bush walk remains with the guide and camp manager. Walks are per camp managements discretion.

Directions For Drivers

From Eastgate/Hoedspruit Airport: Turn left and proceed along this road. After about 14 km, turn right at the Thornybush signboard onto Guernsey Road. Continue for approximately 11 km and turn left into the Thornybush Game Reserve gate. Follow signage for Thornybush Game Lodge and continue to Chapungu Tented Camp as directed once in the Reserve.

Do not get out of your car until you reach Chapungu Tented Camp. You may see some wildlife on your way - if you do, slow down and maintain a good distance. Do not drive off-road in any circumstances.

From Hazyview: Follow the R40 towards Klaserie. Continue through Klaserie, and about 6 km before you reach Hoedspruit itself, turn right at the signboard towards Eastgate Airport/Thornybush Reserve/Timbavati Reserve (Argyle Road). Go past the airport, continue along this road and follow the directions as above.

From Kruger National Park/Orpen Gate: Exit the Park, and continue along the R531. Turn right onto the R40, and follow the directions as above.

From Johannesburg/Pretoria: Take the N12 or N4 highway to Witbank/eMalahleni (from Johannesburg Airport, follow signs to Boksburg to find the N12). Follow the N4 highway past Middleburg (Toll Plaza), Belfast/eMakhazeni and Machadodorp (Toll Plaza). Follow the Schoemanskloof option on the N4 and then take the R36 to Lydenburg/Mashishing.

Follow the R36 to Ohrigstad, go through the Strydom Tunnel and take the R527 to Hoedspruit. Turn right onto the R40 towards Klaserie, and continue along this road until you see the turning off to the left for Eastgate Airport. Turn left here and follow the directions as above.

General Information For Guests

All rooms have air conditioning, a fan, tea/coffee making facilities, a balcony/deck, hair dryer, a mini bar, room safe, en-suite bathroom with a bath and shower, mosquito nets and internet access (additional cost).

The main lodge has a swimming pool, curio shop, bar, dining area and 24 hour security.

The day starts as dawn breaks over the African bushveld. After an early morning wake up call, coffee, tea and rusks are served on the main deck. Shortly after, you depart in an open Land Rover with experienced rangers and trackers who will share their extensive knowledge of the bush. These drives are undertaken at times best suited for game viewing which vary depending on the season but typically start early morning. Where applicable you may be invited out of the vehicle to see tracks, examine certain plants and follow spoor. The afternoon game drive is preceded by high tea and extends into the evening to view seldom seen nocturnal species by torchlight.

Guided bush walks after breakfast can be arranged.

A laundry service is available (additional cost).

Credit card facilities are available.

Guests accommodated at Chapungu Tented Bush Camp may make use of the Thornybush Amani Spa. Guests will be transferred to the Spa for their treatment and return to Chapungu thereafter (additional cost).

Guests are invited to visit to the Hlokomela Community Project encompassing local initiatives to provide services to the local communities. The Thornybush Collection chooses to support the Hlokomela Community Projects and invites guests to visit the project which is approximately a 45 minutes drive from Thornybush Nature Reserve in an air conditioned minibus. A morning hot air balloon safari (one hour) over the scenic Lowveld section of the Blyde River can also be arranged. Game spotting cannot be guaranteed but on most flights guests see plains game like giraffe and wildebeest. Terms and Conditions available on request. Additional costs apply.

If you are arriving/departing via FedAir, the camp is a 5 minute drive away from the airstrip.
