Summary Of The Route and Costs
This short 7 night break is ideal if you have a very young family and you want them to experience a safari for the first time.
You start with a few nights in Cape Town, staying in a self-catering apartment in the heart of the Waterfront area. It is then your choice whether you go out to eat, or else there are plenty of food shops where you can buy food in and prepare it yourself in the fully equipped apartment kitchen. If you did prefer to venture out, a short walk will take you to a plethra of restaurants - everything from burgers to fried chicken to seafood - so even if your children are fussy eaters, you should find something here that will suit!
You will also have a hire car during your time in the city, so you can escape and venture further afield. Children love a trip to Boulders Beach, which is home to a nesting colony of penguins - and if you take your swimmos, you can also swim off the beach here with the penguins too! But be prepared for some bracing sea temperatures!
You then head off along the Garden Route to the Garden Route Game Lodge. This is one of only a handful of lodges in Southern Africa that will allow children of any age to go on a game drive with adults. There is something very special about seeing your child's face light up with excitement the first time they see an actual zebra or giraffe in real life! For adults, the reserve is small so it will not be a hair-raising exciting safari - but with young children, this is probably for the best!
You then end with a couple of nights in Hermanus. Hermanus in the whale watching season (June-November) is famous for being able to spot these gentle giants from the clifftop paths, but whenever you visit this small coastal town, a stay here also gives you the chance to visit one of their sandy beaches - and the mild Mediterranean climate makes this a popular beach destination throughout the year. Some beaches even have snorkel-friendly rock pools during high tide. The largest beach is Grotto Beach, and the Blue Flag section makes this a very popular and family-friendly choice.
