Muchenje Safari Lodge provides some of Botswana's finest safari accommodation in Chobe. The lodge sits atop an escarpment overlooking the banks of the Chobe River and has unparalleled views across the impressive flood plains. Situated on the quiet western edge of the Chobe National Park, Muchenje is a 5 minutes drive from Chobe's Ngoma Gate. Morning and afternoon game drives use this gate to enter and explore this area of the Park along the banks of the Chobe River. The drives explore the river road and woodland areas that are adjacent to the river, which host a myriad of species. The Chobe flood plains provide an important food source for thousands of animals during the winter months (June to November) and witnessing this prolific wildlife is a safari goers dream!  Along with the immense diversity of species of plains game is an impressive number of predators that also rely on this prolific game activity. Game drives are rarely uneventful, and especially during the winter months they can be a wildlife extravaganza!

Guests can also enjoy boat cruises on the Chobe River, launched from Muchenje's private jetty, as well as guided morning bush walks to explore the river frontage and the open pans within easy reach of the lodge, and exciting night drives to spot smaller nocturnal animals such as porcupine and genet.

Each of the 11 en-suite rooms are exquisitely furnished and have a wonderful African ambience. Each room has their own incredible double aspect views of the Chobe River, with private veranda.

The elegant main safari lodge incorporates a dining area, bar, viewing platforms, viewing decks and a small gift shop. The lodge's swimming pool takes full advantage of the fantastic views and provides a tranquil setting for guests to relax during the heat of the day.

General Information For Guests

All rooms have air conditioning, room fans, mosquito nets, indoor shower, safe, mini bar (stocked on request), tea/coffee making facilities, private deck, and a hair dryer.

A laundry service is available (additional cost).

Mastercard and Visa credit cards are accepted.

There is a main swimming pool and a boma, as well as a dining room and bar area.  There is also a curio shop.

Morning and afternoon game drives are conducted in open and comfortable 4x4 safari vehicles, led by knowledgeable and friendly professionally qualified guides Full day drives can be arranged on request.  Each vehicle seats a maximum of 6 guests per vehicle.

A river safari is a wonderful chance to see huge herds of elephants, as well as many other mammals and birds attracted to the water's edge. The boat trip is part of a full day excursion and explores the river during the middle of the day when guests can enjoy a peaceful lunch whilst enjoying all that comes to the river to drink.

Guided bush walks allow you to learn about the intricacies of a safari, the small things such as tracks, trees
and insects. Walks are available all year round and are best in the early morning to avoid the heat of the day.

The lodge also offers fascinating drives after dinner each night. Leaving the lodge at about 21:00 the drives venture onto the river road in front of the lodge. Without fences between the Park and forest reserve, there is the full array of species to find. But for the hour or so that the night drive is out, the smaller nocturnal animals are often enjoyed - such as porcupine, genet, civet etc.

Mokoro trips are available during the flood season (April to December) when the water levels permit it, and are enjoyed in the channels and pools of water which fill the flood plains below Muchenje. Relaxing and exploring the water lilies is a well-known Botswana experience.

For guests staying 3 nights, a visit to the local village of Muchenje is also offered. This includes meeting a local family in their homestead and being introduced to traditional skills and customs. Visiting Mabele Primary School at breaktime is often a highlight.
