Elegantly designed and set within a rugged landscape, Kwandwe Fort House is a sole use villa in a private setting, with sweeping views of the Great Fish River Valley and overlooking a private waterhole.

Located in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, the Kwandwe Private Game Reserve features 22,000 hectares of pristine wilderness, and is home to the famous Big Five, as well as cheetah, kudu, springbok, eland, red hartebeest, giraffe, black wildebeest and gemsbok.

In addition to a diverse number of smaller and more unusual species, the reserve is a paradise for birdwatchers. The fish eagle and endangered blue crane are among a wide variety of birds seen here.

A private safari vehicle with a dedicated ranger and tracker offers flexibility for daily game drives, game walks, big game walking safaris as well as fishing.

The central location of the house provides easy access to the prime game viewing areas of Kwandwe, while ensuring peace and tranquillity.

Comfortably accommodating families of up to 8, the house features 2 master bedrooms and 2 suites, as well as free-flowing living and entertainment areas, a wine cellar, the spa treatment room, and refreshing swimming pool, making Fort House the perfect escape.

The house has a host of staff secretly on hand to ensure everything is taken care of, leaving you free to enjoy your surroundings.

Rates Include

The Kwandwe conservation levy; 3 meals daily; soft drinks, house wines, beers, local and premium brand spirits; tea/coffee; dining experiences on the reserve; twice daily game drives; nature walks accompanied by an armed ranger; big game walking safaris (tracking white rhino, black rhino, elephant and buffalo on foot, accompanied by an armed specialist ranger and tracker team); fishing; morning visits/volunteering activities at the Mgcamabele Community Centre; refreshments on game drives; transfers to and from the reserve's airstrip; emergency medical evacuation insurance; complimentary child-minding; and a laundry service are included.


Children Policy

Children of any age are welcome. Rates available on request. A child minding service is included. Children under 12 years of age are not permitted on nature walks. In addition children under 16 years cannot partake in the big game walking safari activity.

Directions For Drivers

From Port Elizabeth: Travel eastwards along the N2 towards Grahamstown. Travel past Grahamstown and the Settlers Monument, ignoring the Beaufort Street and R67 Port Alfred turn-offs.

A few kilometres past Grahamstown turn left onto the road at the R67 Fort Beaufort. Wind your way through the Ecca Pass for approximately 22 km, before turning left onto a gravel road at the Kwandwe sign. This turn-off is also marked Kranzdrift.

Travel about 5 km to reach the Kwandwe gate, and continue straight along that road for a further 6 km. The first house on the left is Heatherton Towers Reception area, where you will check-in and leave your car. You will then be transferred to Fort House, which is a half-an-hour's drive away.

From East London: Travel along the N2 towards King Williamstown and then on to Grahamstown. Before reaching Grahamstown turn left onto the road at the R67 Fort Beaufort, then follow the directions as above.

Please be aware, as you approach Heatherton Towers that you are in a wilderness area where predators and high-profile game roam freely. Do not leave your car for any reason without a guide present. Should you require assistance, please call +27 (0) 46 603 3400.



General Information For Guests

The suites are en-suite with a bath, double vanity and showers. They also have air conditioning, a fan, in-room safe, a complimentary mini bar, telephone and a hairdryer.

There are 2 outdoor showers.

The house features a kitchen, dining and lounge area, spa room, study, gym deck, a main viewing deck, braai terrace, swimming pool and a boma.

Complimentary Wi-Fi is provided. There is mobile/cell phone connectivity.

Activities that are available include game drives, nature walks, big game walking safaris, fishing excursions, and morning visits/volunteering activities at the Mgcamabele Community Centre.

Activities that are available at an additional cost include rhino monitoring drives, volunteering at Kwandwe, private campfire cooking lessons and private walking safaris.

The big game walking safaris and the morning visits/volunteering activities at Mgcamabele Community Centre are subject to availability and must be booked in advance.

Massages in the spa treatment room, and in-room spa treatments can also be arranged (additional cost)
