Finch Hattons

Tsavo National Park

Days 1 - 3: Tsavo National Park

Finch Hattons Location Map

Finch Hattons lies at the heart of Tsavo West National Park - part of Kenya's single largest game Park - in a 35 acre private concession. Privately owned and managed, Finch Hattons offers guests a unique opportunity to relive the golden era of the safari with elegance, first class comforts and the finest cuisine surrounded by the spectacle of the great African wilderness.

Tsavo is known for its herds of 'red elephants', their skins stained by the ochre dust and mud. The Park is home to nearly 12,000 elephants - one of the largest populations in East Africa. Other commonly seen species include giraffe, zebra, eland, buffalo, impala, hartebeest, bushbuck, wildebeest and many more.

The main restaurant of Finch Hattons reflects a bygone era of taste and elegance. In the evening an exquisite dinner is served. Although jackets and ties are excused, gentlemen are requested to wear long trousers.

The comfortable lounge and bar areas are elegantly furnished to create an informal country house atmosphere. The bar is open all day and also services the pool terraces. Indigenous trees surround an elevated swimming pool and shaded deck area where guests can enjoy a refreshing swim or take time to relax between game drives. There is also a Health and Wellness Centre with a spa pool and massage pavillions, and a gym.

The 14 spacious Tented Suites each have a lavish en-suite bathroom complete with 2 outdoor showers, an indoor shower, and a free standing copper bath tub, and an outdoor sitting deck.

The 2 spacious Family Suites have 2 separate en-suite bedrooms, a large viewing deck, and a private lounge area.

The Finch Hattons Suite has a spacious master bedroom, a lounge and dining area, a small kitchen, an extended viewing deck and a private heated plunge pool. Additional services for this Suite include a private chef, butler service and the exclusive use of a safari vehicle.

All 17 Suites have unobstructed views of the hippo pools, which are fed by the fresh water springs of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Chyulu Hills.

Iltilal is the closest village to Finch Hattons and home to a large Maasai community. The camp has developed a close relationship with the village and can easily organise cultural visits here for a chance to gain some insight into their daily way of life. The Maasai are a very welcoming tribe and are always happy to invite you into their homes for a closer glimpse into their lifestyle.

While the best game viewing is generally in the coolness of the early mornings or late afternoons, you are free to decide how long and when you would like to set out for your game drive. Using only open-sided vehicles, you can experience the quintessential African landscape and the wide range of birds and flora and fauna that thrive in the surrounding area. There is also the opportunity to head into the Park after sunset for a chance to discover some of the more nocturnal species of Tsavo.

Guests can also choose to get a little more up-close and personal with the Park's flora and fauna on a guided nature walk. You will be accompanied by an experienced guide and armed ranger who will be happy to share their vast knowledge of how nature lives and thrives in Tsavo.

Though there are several different dining areas at camp, guests can opt to enjoy a gourmet breakfast served in the heart of the bush. After your morning game drive, rather than heading back to camp, the camp will set up a full breakfast somewhere along the way for a real al-fresco experience.

Lunch is normally served on the main deck with individual tables and guests can order from the a la carte menu. Dinner could be around a large communal table, out in the bush or somewhere private just for two.

The central Main Tent features a main lounge area with an open fireplace, a library of books, iPads for guest use, iPod docking stations and speaker systems, a games console and a TV/DVD player for those who wish to keep in touch with the news or sport. There are also binoculars available for guests (although it's a good idea to bring your own) and a telescope for stargazing plus a 12 metre outdoor infinity pool, big enough for a leisurely swim or a refreshing dip.
