Arusha Serena Hotel

Arusha

Day 1: Arusha

Arusha Serena Hotel Location Map

Nestled at the foot of the wooded slopes of Mount Meru, the Arusha Serena Hotel stands amid coffee plantations overlooking the shores of the tranquil Lake Duluti. Designed to echo the traditional style of the colonial coffee farm, which originally stood on this site, the hotel offers a range of tastefully presented cottage-styled rooms set amid landscaped grounds.

The hotel features a stone-built reception with adjoining lounge, library, restaurant and boutique shop. Imposing in stature and spacious in concept, the design of the building echoes the hotel's original incarnation as a working coffee farm dating back to colonial times.

Both the bar and restaurant offer blazing log fires, lake and garden views, and an elegant yet relaxed ambience. Cuisine includes local and international dishes and weekend buffet events are held on the broad open-air terraces. The hotel also offers a range of acrobatic and cultural shows for guest's entertainment on certain evenings.

Guests can enjoy a broad range of activities at an additional cost, which include massage treatments, guided walking trails, mountain biking, and canoeing on the lake. If you have time to explore Arusha itself, the hotel can arrange a trip for you. The streets here jostle with safari vehicles, market traders, and Masai warriors in traditional dress. Curio markets offer the opportunity to buy good quality crafts and gifts at reasonable prices.

The rooms and suites are presented in the style of stone-built cottages, which are grouped in clusters around a flower-filled central ‘village square'. Spacious and elegantly presented in classic country-house style, they feature marble bathrooms, leaded windows and double French doors giving way to tgarden and lake views, a stylish work or vanity area, and large comfortable beds.

The hotel is approximately 20 km from Arusha and 40 km from Kilimanjaro Airport.

Tarangire Simba Lodge

Tarangire National Park

Day 2: Tarangire National Park

Tarangire Simba Lodge Location Map

The Tarangire National Park is the 6th largest Park in Tanzania and is especially renowned for its large herds of elephants. It is estimated that the Park is home to the largest elephant population in northern Tanzania and some elephant herds can be as large as 600 strong.

Also on game drives you may spot giraffe, waterbuck, impala, warthog, kudu, dik dik, pods of hippo and troops of baboons and vervet monkeys, along with lion, spotted hyena, cheetah and leopard - and last but not least, tree-climbing pythons.

The Park takes its name from the Tarangire River that crosses through the Park, and which is the lifeblood for the wildlife that flock here during the dry season months (June to September), making these months splendid for game viewing. Huge herds of antelope, zebra, buffalo and wildebeest amass along the river banks and graze on the Park's fertile plains.

Located close to Tarangire National Park near the Sangaiwe Gate, Tarangire Simba Lodge is situated in a wildlife-rich area with unhampered views to the beautiful Lake Burunge. Bordered by the Park and a Wildlife Management Area, the setting is stunning.

The main guest areas include a swimming pool, a reception area and a separate lounge and dining room - all connected by wooden walkways. In addition, there is a deck for outdoor dining, plus a ‘tree-top’ viewing platform built in a stately acacia tree to facilitate wildlife watching and star gazing. Afternoon tea is on hand from 15:30 and there is also a fully stocked bar with wine list featuring South African wines.

Elephant, buffalo, ostrich and giraffe frequently pass through the camp, while the birdlife is prolific and vibrant. During the dry season, the small waterhole located in front of the lodge is often visited by a variety of wildlife, and guests can enjoy watching the animals gather to drink from their rooms or the viewing platform.

The accommodation is in 16 classic canvas safari tents constructed on wooden platforms each with en-suite facilities as well as an outdoor shower, and a private veranda with views over the bush. All of this is topped with a thatched roof, complementing rather than intruding on the natural environment. Solar power provides both electricity and hot water. Furnishings are handcrafted from African hardwood decorated with local fabrics.

There is also a family tent.

Situated near the legendary Sametu and Barafu Kopjes, the camp has panoramic views of the wide open savannah plains and also of the Ngarenanyuki River which meanders nearby.  The river attracts wildlife year round, and guests can be assured of excellent game viewing due to the resident populations of large herds of plains game (giraffe, zebra and antelope), which in turn attract predators to the area such as lion, cheetah, leopard and hyena. Mara Under Canvas

The Serengeti

Days 7 - 8: The Serengeti

Mara Under Canvas Location Map

Deep within the northern Serengeti's prime wildlife area, within the Tanzanian corner of the Mara Triangle, Mara Under Canvas offers the perfect setting from which to witness the Great Migration and to explore the more remote corners of Tanzania’s oldest and most famous National Park. An area of lush rolling grasslands, rocky outcrops and tree-lined watercourses, your game viewing will be complemented by some of the most beautiful scenery that the Serengeti has to offer.  To fully appreciate the scenery, a balloon safari can be arranged during your stay here (additional cost), which take place in the early morning as the sun rises.

The camp is only open from June to November. During these months, vast herds of wildebeest, accompanied by large numbers of zebra, and smaller numbers of Grant's gazelle, Thompson's gazelle, impala and eland move north from the southern plains in search of food and water. They are followed by an array of predators including lion, cheetah and hyena. The Mara River provides the migration with its largest obstacle and many animals fall prey to hungry crocodiles.

The camp has 10 spacious safari tents each with a double bed and en-suite bathroom. A team of friendly and attentive staff ensures that guests enjoy absolute comfort while experiencing the sights, sounds and smells of the African bush. There is also one family tent which can sleep up to 2 adults and 3 children in two interconnecting tents with a shared bathroom.

There is a dining tent and a separate lounge tent with comfortable chairs and a choice of board games and books to enjoy during rest periods between game drives. The camp is ecofriendly and runs on solar lighting.
