Rovos Rail - Pretoria to Swakopmund

Rovos Rail

Each year this 9 day 3,400 km rail journey on the Rovos Rail 'Pride of Africa' takes you from the savannahs of the Highveld in South Africa to the Atlantic Ocean in Namibia.

Step aboard the train at the gracious Rovos Rail Station in Pretoria and embark on a truly world-class travel experience. The reconditioned wood-panelled coaches - classics remodelled and refurbished to mint condition - include Observation Cars, with their large windows, relaxing Lounge Cars with deep sofas and wingback chairs, Club Cars with a glass passage wall where you can comfortably watch the scenery on both sides of the train, and the elegant pre-1940 Dining Cars where delicious 5* cuisine is served.

The trains carry a maximum of 72 passengers in superbly appointed Pullman, Deluxe or Royal Suites. These air-conditioned suites accommodate 2 people, and all have en-suite bathrooms, and offer passengers the opportunity to travel in privacy, comfort and luxury, with fittings and facilities that are of the highest standard.

In maintaining the spirit of travel of a bygone era, there are no radios or televisions on board.

You will travel from Pretoria through the stark vistas of the arid Northern Cape into Namibia, across the Kalahari Desert and onto Swakopmund, a perfectly preserved 19th Century German Hansa town set between the dunes of the Namib Desert and the roaring Atlantic Ocean.

Visit the spectacular Fish River Canyon - second in size to the Grand Canyon - and the 'ghost town' of Keetmanshoop.  Visit Windhoek and Sossusvlei, and overnight at a lodge on the eastern edge of the game-rich Etosha National Park.

A truly unforgettable and remarkable journey.
