Matetsi River Lodge

Victoria Falls - Zimbabwe

Matetsi River Lodge Location Map

The luxurious Matetsi River Lodge is renowned for sophisticated accommodation and sweeping views of the river and surrounding African wilderness. The lodge is situated in a private 55,000 hectare reserve which has 9 miles (15 km) of river frontage. Whilst Matetsi's location near to the largest waterfall in the world is clearly one of the main attractions of staying here - this UNESCO World Heritage Site is just 40 km away - there are a host of other activities that can be enjoyed too.

Experienced rangers and trackers will lead you on interpretive game-drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles across the reserve. Guests can enjoy sightings of massive herds of elephant and buffalo as well as the rare and majestic sable antelope. The reserve is also home to lion, spotted hyena, African wild dog and leopard. Matetsi is one of the very few areas in Zimbabwe where night game-drives are permitted, revealing a host of interesting nocturnal animals.

An interpretive bush walk, led by a professional ranger, is an absolute must for those looking to get even closer to the incredible wilderness of the reserve. This adventure-filled activity allows guests to learn more about the intricacies of the African bush, with the thrilling opportunity to get up-close-and-personal to its inhabitants, from small to large.

Another popular activity are the leisurely morning and/or afternoon riverboat cruises on Matetsi's private stretch along the mighty Zambezi River, offering the perfect opportunity to spot Matetsi's incredible birdlife, hippos and elephants while watching a glorious sunrise or sunset. Canoeing excursions can also be arranged, as can scenic flights over the Falls in a helicopter.

Whatever your preference, be it on foot, game vehicle, boat or helicopter, you will be amazed and rewarded by the abundance and diversity of this wilderness frontier. For those less energetically inclined, a massage in the outdoor spa or a visit to the owner’s well-stocked private wine cellar where you can view his personal collection of vintage toy train, car and army collections will not disappoint.

The lodge boasts 2 intimate camps. Each camp features its own guest area with a variety of dining spaces, an interactive kitchen, an convival bar and an al fresco area that encircles a blazing fire bowl.

Each camp has 8 spacious river-facing suites and one 2 bedoomed family suite. The clean lines of the interiors are softened by authentic craft pieces. A lovely en-suite bathroom boasts indoor and outdoor showers as well as a deep circular bath, which looks out over the Zambezi. A private veranda offers a refreshing plunge pool and a comfortable sitting area that overlooks the river.

In addition, the Matetsi River House, a 4 bedroomed sole-use villa, is perfect for families or groups travelling together. It has its own kitchen, indoor and outdoor dining areas, a veranda overlooking the Zambezi and a sparkling pool. It also comes with its own dedicated staff, including a chef, guide, private vehicle and a butler, ensuring a tailor-made stay unlike any other.
