Olive Exclusive

Windhoek

Day 1: Windhoek

Olive Exclusive Location Map

This intimate boutique hotel in a tranquil corner of Windhoek embodies the very essence of chic comfort.

The Olive Exclusive - the first ultra-luxurious sanctuary of its kind in the Namibian capital - is cool, contemporary and stylish but with a warm heart and authentic African soul. Its sleek, modern lines are complemented by organic textures, natural furnishings, an eco-friendly approach and dedicated personal service.

Simple elegance is key, from the organic rough-hewn wooden benches and side tables, through the sculpted chunk of granite that serves as a coffee table in the guest lounge, to walls clad in abstract Namibian landscapes by well-known South African designer and photographer Micky Hoyle.

All this combines to make the Olive Exclusive an extremely easy and luxurious overnight stop to begin or end your Namibian holiday, or if time permits, stay longer for a relaxing treat.

The 7 suites are individually decorated, so each reflects a different region in Namibia, and each has its own lounge area with fireplace and dining room, for private dining. Wide glass doors open onto spacious decks where you can relax on a shady daybed, enjoy al fresco lunches or, if you are staying in one of the Premium Suites, take a dip in your own private plunge pool.

Such are the creature comforts that you may find it hard to leave: sink into an extra-length bed dressed in crisp, pure-cotton linen, or indulge in a bubble bath in a freestanding tub with sweeping mountain views. Air-conditioning, high definition satellite TV and iPod docking stations are standard, as is a computer with WiFi access. Then there's a fully stocked mini bar, complete with a premium wine selection, so you can toast the setting sun in fine style.

Bagatelle Ranch

Western Kalahari

Day 2: Western Kalahari

Olive Exclusive Location Map

Stretching from the eastern borders with Botswana and South Africa across the southern part of Namibia to the Namib Desert in the west, the Western Kalahari offering a spectacular desert landscape of red sand dotted with quiver trees, interspersed with sweeping grasslands and dusty scrub.

Derived from the Tswana word 'Kgalagadi', meaning 'the great thirst', the Kalahari is one of the world's most extensive mantles of sand.

Many people insist that the Kalahari should not really qualify for the title of 'desert' as it receives more than 100 mm of rain per year. Howver, the sand sheet that covers the Kalahari results in virtually no surface water, and evidence suggests that it may have once been much more arid that it is now. So although commonly called a 'desert', a better description of it would be a 'fossil desert'.

For most visitors to Namibia, this semi-arid region serves as a stop-over during the long journey between Windhoek and the South.

Situated amidst the red rolling dunes of the Kalahari, where the silence is deafening and tranquillity flows in abundance, lies Bagatelle Ranch.

Offering personalized service, fine hospitality, and good home cooked meals, the Ranch is also home to 3 orphaned cheetahs that belong to the Cheetah Conservation Fund and cannot be released in the wild, 2 families of meerkats (suricates), as well as oryx, springbok, blue wildebeest and many more.

Fish River Lodge

The Fish River Canyon

Days 3 - 4: The Fish River Canyon

Fish River Lodge Location Map

The Fish River Canyon is situated between the Namib and Kalahari deserts, and the only roads to it are across vast areas of flat and barren landscapes, sparsely populated with desert plants, quiver trees and cacti. At 160 km in length, up to 27 km wide in places, and a depth reaching up to 550m, it is certainly hugely imposing and one of Southern Africa's most stunning natural features. The whole place feels magical and unvisited, despite being a major tourist attraction, and it is very likely that you will have one of the spectacular viewing points to yourself.

The most popular viewing times are sunrise or sunset, mainly because the canyon walls glow a beautiful warm colour with the reflected light, and also because this avoids having to be out in the intense midday sun.

The main viewing point is at the northern end of the canyon, and the view across the canyon from here is probably the most photographed shot. Hiker's View Point, just a short drive away, is the start of the 85 km Fish River hiking trail. As well as being another spectacular view of the canyon, it also offers a fantastic perspective of just how steep the Canyon walls really are.

At the southern end of the Fish River Canyon is the Ai-Ais Hot Springs resort. 'Ai-Ais' in Nama means 'burning water', and this is an extremely apt name, as the thermal water can reach temperatures of up to 65 degrees C.

Fish River Lodge is the only lodge perched directly on the rim of the Fish River Canyon offering guests breathtaking views of the canyon from sunrise to sunset. Twenty spacious chalets are positioned along the rim with sufficient distance from each other to ensure privacy and quiet at all times.

Set in a grove of ancient Quiver trees, the lodge has been carefully designed to echo the terraced and rugged terrain as well as the colours and textures of the landscape.  There is a blend of classical and contemporary furnishings and many of the accessories have been made by San and Nama communities whose ancestors once roamed the terrain - authenticity, comfort and simplicity are key to the lodge's unique ambiance.

The Nest Hotel

The Southern Namib

Day 5: The Southern Namib

The Nest Hotel Location Map

The Southern Namib, with its solitude, its wide open spaces, rugged landscapes and stunning desert sunsets is certainly one of Namibia's gems.

Aus is the gateway to the Southern Namib Naukluft Park, and the legendary wild horses that roam the desert, sharing the arid landscape with gemsbok and springbok.

Luderitz is a small coastal town with an eclectic selection of colourful Bavarian/German colonial style architecture, surrounded on one side by the South Atlantic Ocean, and on the other side by the sand dunes of the Namib Desert. The Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias was the first European to set eyes on Luderitz, when he sought shelter in the bay during a storm on Christmas Day 1487. Upon his return from the Cape of Good Hope in July 1488, he erected a stone cross at what is now known as Dias Point.  Although the original cross is no longer there, a replica marble cross has been erected in its place.

Namibia's most visited ghost town, Kolmanskop, lies 10 km inland from Luderitz. The desert sand has blown in and around the deserted buildings, burying some almost completely in sand. Others are still half visible, their doors hanging open as the sand slowly engulfs more rooms.

The Nest Hotel is the ideal place from which to explore the many attractions in and around Luderitz, such as Dias Point, the ghost town of Kolmanskop or the Bogenfels rock arch.

Each of the guest rooms and suites are sea-facing and have air-conditioning, satellite TV, radio and telephone. Other guest facilities include a large swimming pool, a wellness centre with sea facing sauna and the Oyster Bar with sun deck serving fresh oysters while you enjoy the full view over the Atlantic Ocean.

Wolwedans Dunes Lodge

NamibRand Nature Reserve

Day 6: NamibRand Nature Reserve

The Nest Hotel Location Map

Wolwedans nestles into the dunes and is set against a backdrop of extraordinary natural beauty. Located in the heart of NamibRand Nature Reserve, Dunes Lodge is the perfect base from which to explore vast stretches of awe-inspiring and undisturbed nature.

Wolwedans is not a dune hotel or a one night stop over destination, which can be ticked off en-route to the next tourist hot-spot. It is a place to arrive, to be, to learn and unwind, whilst being looked after by a friendly and involved local team. Wolwedans provides an honest, relaxed and down-to-earth atmosphere, free of 'wannabe' fanciness and pretence.

Wolwedans provides the perfect base from which to explore vast stretches of undisturbed nature. The personal and informative scenic drives in open Landrovers reveal the wonders of the wilderness.

Scenic flights are another popular activity at Wolwedans. Commencing during the late afternoon, these flights give you a birds-eye view of the Diamond Coast and Sossusvlei and is a truly exhilarating and once-in-a-lifetime experience.

A special attraction at NamibRand is hot-air ballooning. Soaring silently over the dune belts and never-ending plains provides unforgettable and breathtaking 360 degree vistas. From the best viewpoint imaginable, you admire the stark beauty of the Namib for about an hour, before celebrating this once in a lifetime experience with a champagne breakfast at the landing spot.

Dunes Lodge is perched on top of a dune plateau, overlooking panoramic vistas in all directions and capturing the beauty of the desert in a most memorable way. The main lodge is a combination of wooden structures and canvas blinds, opening up to the desert beyond.

Each of the 9 spacious chalets with en-suite bathrooms sport a private verandah, which connects you to vast stretches of untouched sand. Sleeping with your canvas blinds open is just like sleeping under the stars.

The lodge also has a swimming pool, which is suspended above the sand.

Where you intercept the C19 turn left and after some 5km, turn right onto the D845. Travel some 16 km’s and turn left onto the C27. You stay on the C27 heading south until you reach the first NamibRand signboard. Carry on straight and remain on this road for approx. 45 km until you find the Wolwedans gate on the right hand side. Follow the signs to the Wolwedans farmhouse/reception, which is another 20 km’s from the gate. From here you will be transferred to the Wolwedans Dune Camp or Wolwedans Dunes Lodge. Please do not leave the main road!

Little Kulala Location Map

Little Kulala is a luxurious desert retreat situated in the private 37,000 hectare Kulala Wilderness Reserve - the gateway to Namibia's Dune Sea with its towering dunes and clear starry skies. The camp takes its design inspiration from its surroundings, notably from the magnificent Dead Vlei in the middle of Sossusvlei. The overall mood and feel is cool, serene, organic and sheltering.

Little Kulala features an elegant main guest area which includes a library, wine cellar, craft boutique, lounge and dining areas. The interiors have been designed to provide an all-natural and unique experience in this most beautiful environment. The extensive use of neutral colours, gorgeous textures and natural light reproduce the soothing pastel tones of the desert. There is also a central shaded swimming pool. A water hole in front of the main lodge building provides the opportunity to see gemsbok (oryx), springbok, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, ostrich and jackals.

Activities at Little Kulala include morning guided drives to the spectacular towering dunes of Sossusvlei, through a private gate into the reserve. Guided drives and walks are also offered on the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve with incredible views, desert-adapted wildlife and plants, and the sunset/sundowner excusion is always very popular! Quad-biking can also be arranged as can a hot air balloon trip.

Accommodation consists of 11 climate-controlled, thatched 'kulalas' (the word means 'to sleep') which merge impeccably into the timeless desert landscape. Each kulala has exquisite fittings and fixtures, and an innovative bleached deck with a private plunge pool. The en-suite bathroom has both indoor and outdoor showers.

A staircase leading to the flat rooftop above the bathroom provides the ideal setting for star-gazing, and mattresses and duvets can be made up into a 'skybed' for an unforgettable night of sleeping out under the stars.

Hotel Zum Kaiser

Swakopmund

Days 9 - 10: Swakopmund

Little Kulala Location Map

Surrounded on 3 sides by the Namib desert, and on the 4th by the Atlantic Ocean, Swakopmund is an interesting blend of African and German heritage, and one of the most friendly towns in Southern Africa. Many of the locals are of German descent, and together with its beautifully preserved German colonial architecture, the availability of German style beer, and the precise orderly manner which is evident everywhere, you would be forgiven for thinking you were in a small town in Germany, and not on the edge of the Namib Desert.

Probably the most popular single activity is quad-biking over the large red sand dunes that start from the edge of the town, or try sandboarding down the dunes as an alternative. The Cape Cross Seal Reserve is a 125 km drive north of Swakopmund, and home to breeding colonies of thousands of Cape fur seals.

Several operators also offer scenic flights. The 2 most popular options are to take a flight north up the coastline, over the Skeleton Coast and back round, or to  fly across the desert to the Sossusvlei Dunes and back to Swakopmund along the coastline, taking-in a number of shipwrecks.

Graciousness meets contemporary chic at the Hotel Zum Kaiser (formerly the Swakopmund Boutique Hotel) and Pension, a luxurious boutique hotel in the historic heart of Swakopmund. This intimate boutique hotel offers direct access to the town's vibrant street life, quaint architecture, shopping, fine dining and long walks on the beach.

Each of the 21 rooms is custom-designed, and the 12 sea-view rooms offer space with a private balcony and breathtaking views.

The Garden Roof Terrace is an inviting area where you can relax and enjoy sundowners as you take in the spectacular sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean, and the Desert Wellness Centre will help guests rejuvenate body and mind.

Okonjima Luxury Bush Camp

Okonjima Nature Reserve

Day 16: Okonjima Nature Reserve

Okonjima Luxury Bush Camp Location Map

Okonjima is much more than a luxury lodge. It is also the home of the AfriCat Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation and welfare of Namibia's wild predators, especially cheetahs and leopards.

Since being founded in 1991, AfriCat’s mission has been to make significant contributions to conservation, while trying to ensure the survival of Namibia’s predators in their natural habitat. It undertakes research, community support and environmental education projects, as well as conservation work to rehabilitate carnivores such as cheetah and hyena.

A highlight for anyone visiting Okonjima is to learn about their big-cat passion. Leopards roam freely and hunt within the 20,00 hectare reserve, and an opportunity to see them on game drives led by experienced guides is why guests travel continents to stay here. You may also spot other rare and endangered species such as rhino and pangolin. Guests can also get involved in collecting and collating data, and assisting with actual research being conducted by AfriCat.

Some of AfriCat’s captive carnivores are too old or too habituated to be reintroduced to the wild, so another activity is to embark on an informative afternoon walking trail, and ending the day with a sundowner in an area which has a high density of rarely-seen brown hyena.

The luxury Bush Camp is situated at the edge of a wilderness area. Each of the 8 unique thatched, African-style chalets enjoys complete privacy, and is an attractive combination of earthy, ochre walls and khaki-green canvas, under a thatched roof.

The front 180 degrees of canvas panelling can be rolled up, inviting you to enjoy your own 'bushveld' vista, and in front of each chalet, a birdbath is visited by a variety of birds and small mammals.

There is also a Junior Suite with a private lounge area and fireplace to keep you warm during the winter nights.

Olive Exclusive

Windhoek

Day 17: Windhoek
