Ilala Lodge

Victoria Falls - Zimbabwe

Days 1 - 2: Victoria Falls - Zimbabwe

Ilala Lodge Location Map

Only a short 2 hour flight from Jo'burg, a trip to Victoria Falls is certainly memorable. One of the 7 Wonders of the World, the sheer noise of the Falls as they cascade over the edge into the deep gorge is deafening, and the misty clouds of spray, occasionally broken by rainbows, are visible from over 40 km away - giving rise to the local name that translates as 'the Smoke that Thunders'.

Ever since the 19th century English explorer David Livingston became the first Westerner to see the Falls, they have held a magical draw for visitors to Africa, and they remain an iconic travel destination that many dream of but few get the chance to visit.

75% of the Falls can be seen from the Ziimbabwe side, and a network of paths allows you to see more of the Falls from virtually every angle, and get a better perspective of its full width and power. Both the widest single part of the falls - the Main Falls - and the greatest drop - the Rainbow Falls at 108 meters - are on the Zimbabwean side, and this side never dries up completely, even at the height of the dry season (October to December).

Another truly spectacular way to view and appreciate the full extent of the Falls is by taking a 'Flight of Angels' helicopter ride over the Falls. Sunset cruises on the Zambezi River are also very popular, and adrenelin seekers can enjoy bungee jumping, white water rafting and body boarding.

Ilala Lodge is the perfect base from which to explore the majestic Victoria Falls. The lodge is ideally situated on the Zimbabwean side of the mighty Zambezi River and the Falls are within easy walking distance for guests, as is the town centre.

Wild animals, such as warthog and impala, often graze on the hotel lawns, providing added entertainment. Restaurant diners can see and hear the majestic roar of 'the smoke that thunders' while they sample fine a la carte cuisine at the Cassia Restaurant paired with an extensive wine list.

All the rooms are spacious and some are decorated with teak furnishings made from railway sleepers. This decor enhances the African ambience and laid-back lodge atmosphere and muted tones and soft furnishings mirror this uncomplicated, restful atmosphere. All rooms have views of the Falls.

The deluxe wing offers 16 deluxe rooms and one executive suite, catering to travellers looking for a bit more luxury for their stay at the Falls.

Cresta Mowana Lodge Location Map

Cresta Mowana Lodge lies on the banks of the Chobe River, where 4 African countries (Botswana, Zambia, Namibia and Zimbabwe) meet. The Chobe National Park is famous for its enormous elephant population. They share the area with lion, leopard, giraffe, cheetah, buffalo, approximately 450 bird species, as well as puku and Chobe bushbuck, which are indigenous to the Park.

The lodge offers numerous opportunities for expertly guided game viewing in the Chobe National Park, by day or night. Breakfast or sunset cruises on the Chobe River can also be arranged, or try your hand at landing a tigerfish while floating on the river in a makoro or motorboat.
