Nairobi Hilton

Nairobi

Day 1: Nairobi

Nairobi Hilton Location Map

Nairobi is the capital of Kenya, and is the country's largest city, and is the arrival point for many visitors into the country. The main airport is Jomo Kenyatta International, located 15 km out of the centre of town, but many itineraries will also include flights into and out of Wilson Airport, located 11 km outside of the city centre, as this is the domestic hub for both scheduled and chartered domestic air traffic.

The capital city is not wholly separated from the great African wilderness that most people come to Kenya to enjoy. Just outside the city is the Nairobi National Park, 113 square km of plains, cliffs and forest. The Park is home to large herds of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe, rhino, cheetah, and a large number of lions - all living wild within 20 minutes of the busy city.

Other wildlife attractions of the city include the Elephant Orphanage, where visitors have the unique opportunity to experience the feeding of baby orphaned elephants and rhinos up close, or the Giraffe Centre, again where visitors can photograph and feed the giraffe.

Or take a visit to the Karen Blixen Museum, Karen Blixen's former home and which was donated by the Danish government to Kenya. Karen Blixen, also known by her pseudonym, Isak Dinesen, is famous for her memoir, Out of Africa. The trained and knowledgeable guides at the museum are on hand to answer any questions on the history of the museum and on Karen Blixen's life.

The Hilton Nairobi hotel is ideally located in the heart of the shopping area of the city, and only 25 minutes drive from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Enjoy international and Kenyan dishes at the Travellers Restaurant, try fine Italian cuisine at Sale E Pepe Restaurant or have a pint at the Hilton Nairobi hotel's Jockey Pub.

Refresh at the outdoor pool, shape up at the gym or have a massage at the hotel's health club. Enjoy a safari and see wildlife at the Nairobi National Park, only 20 minutes drive away, or simply shop at the nearby craft and curio market.

Samburu Intrepids Camp

Samburu Eco-System

Days 4 - 5: Samburu Eco-System

Samburu Intrepids Camp Location Map

Samburu Intrepids is situated on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River in the arid heart of Samburu National Reserve. The camp looks out over riverbanks where herds of elephant, buffalo and zebra come daily to drink - together with the rarer 'northern species' of reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx and long-necked gerenuk antelope. Game drives in Samburu will reveal a dramatic wilderness from a world of fascinating perspectives. You can also enjoy escorted nature walks.

A ride on a camel is a biblical affair crossing the Uaso Nyiro to the Samburu villages on the land opposite the reserve. With a high vantage point, you may chance upon the giraffes or the tiny dikdiks of the dry lands or have to cut back your ride when the elephants block your passage. But it’s a wonderful opportunity to meet the Samburu villagers whose camels you are riding and by doing so, helping them to raise income for their community projects like building schools and taking their children to school.

The main dining room of the camp opens onto an outdoor dining terrace, where buffet breakfasts, lunches and dinners are served overlooking the river. Meals can also be enjoyed on your private verandah or at one of a series of specially selected 'bush sites' close to the camp. Buffet luncheons and candlelight dinners are served on an elevated deck amidst the high shade trees. The lounge and bar offers nightly talks and slide shows, plus there is a freeform 'oasis' swimming pool and sunbathing garden.

There are 27 modern tents with a private view over the wildlife-rich riverbanks. Each tent has soft 4 poster beds, mahogany closets and desks, and en-suite bathrooms with steaming hot showers. The bathrooms also offer twin washbasins, flush toilets, and sockets for shavers and battery charging.

Mara Intrepids Camp

Masai Mara

Days 6 - 7: Masai Mara

Mara Intrepids Camp Location Map

Mara Intrepids is located in a special leopard spotting zone of the Masai Mara. This camp is just a short drive from the Mara River, where over a million wildebeest and zebra make their perilous migration crossing every year.

Outside of the migration period, the camp still offers some of the world's finest game viewing, with large local populations of plains game including, elephant, rhino, buffalo, and all the big cats. Game drives are always a delight here as they don't get much better than in this central triangle of the Masai Mara.

Lion, cheetah, buffalo, spotted hyena, black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox and various antelope are conspicuous in the plains that divide the rivers, whose confluence lies close to the main crossing point used by tens of thousands of wildebeest during the annual migration.

This part of the reserve receives fewer visitors than the eastern part and as such it is possible to drive long periods without seeing another vehicle. The lodge also offers nature walks and cultural visits to local Masai villages.

The camp can also arrange hot air balloon safaris, leaving before dawn, and the Adventurers Club runs various activities for kids.

Mara Intrepids boast 30 luxurious tents that are widely spread across a large riverside site to ensure you the optimum of privacy and peace. Each tent is furnished in the classic style of the grand African safaris, with large 4 poster beds and handsome reproduction furniture, offset by modern en-suite bathrooms. Each tent sits on a shady raised platform, with sweeping views over the riverbanks where a large variety of animals come to drink.

The camp is run on strict eco-principles, with hot water generated by burning used coffee husks, and biodegradable waste mulched for compost.
