Kenya Safari and Zanzibar Beach

Suggested Holiday Itinerary

Kenya Safari and Zanzibar Beach

Summary Of The Route and Costs

A 13 night holiday combining a two-centre safari in Kenya, followed by 7 idyllic nights on the beach in Zanzibar. And the opportunity to adopt a baby elephant too! This really is quite a unique trip!

You will begin your trip with one night in Nairobi which gives you the chance to relax and rest after an overnight flight, ready to start your safari adventure fresh the next morning.

The next day, hopefully fully refreshed, you will be collected by your driver-guide and driven in your private 4x4 safari vehicle down to the Amboseli National Park. This is a drive of about 4 hours but it means you get to see more of the country as you pass through rural villages and you will find the time flies past. Amboseli is situated at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Huge herds of elephants can be spotted as you journey across the plains during your 2 nights here, along with lion, cheetah and over 400 bird species.

You then fly back to Nairobi and onto the Masai Mara for 3 more nights on safari. Big cats, elephants, giraffe, wild dog, buffalo, rhino, hyena, wildebeest, gazelles and impala are just a few of the many animal species that may be spotted on your daily game drives (no night drives are allowed in the actual reserve itself) and hundreds of bird species have also been recorded. The sheer density of game and birdlife makes this an exciting and rewarding safari destination for first-time safari goers or for returning safari enthusiasts.

You then fly back again to Nairobi and connect with a flight down to Zanzibar where you will stay for 7 nights. This exotic island is located about 25 miles from the Tanzanian coast and 6 degrees south of the equator. White sandy beaches line the shores, fringed by wispy palm trees that sway gently in the breeze that comes off the Indian Ocean. The crystal clear and warm turquoise waters entice snorkellers and divers to explore never-ending coral reefs, and romantic dhows cruise into the golden sunsets. The capital of the island is the historic and ancient Stone Town, which has a maze of winding narrow alleys, mosques, grand Arab houses and bustling bazaars selling everything from silk to spices.

Summary Of The Itinerary

Holiday Title: Kenya Safari and Zanzibar Beach

Countries Visited: Kenya and Tanzania

Day 1

Arrive into Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta Airport.

You will be met once you disembark from the plane and assisted through Immigration (including help if required with visa application and processing), luggage collection and Customs (luggage screening).

You will then be accompanied to meet up with your driver/Customer Services representative and transferred to your Nairobi hotel.

House of Waine was originally built in the 1970s as a private home. It was acquired by a local family and carefully refurbished over 2 years resulting in a unique boutique property that still retains the charm of a family home. This 11 bedroomed property blends the elegance of gracious living with the spirit of modern living in an exclusive and serene setting within 2.5 acres of grounds. Upon entering the gates you are immediately transported to another place - one with a gentler, quieter pace compared with the outside world.

Day 2

After breakfast, you will be met by your driver-guide who will show you to your vehicle - a 4x4 which will be for your sole use. The vehicle has sliding windows, a roof hatch and high ground clearance to optimise all round visibility for game viewing and photography.

You will then be driven down to the Amboseli National Park - a drive of about 250 km so it will take about 4 hours - and you will arrive in time for lunch at your camp. With a spectacular backdrop of the snowy peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Amboseli National Park is most famous for its elephant population, where herds of up to 100 can be found drinking at one of the swampy springs that filter up through the rock from an endless underground water supply directly from Kili's ice cap. Some of the bull elephants found here also have incredibly long and impressive tusks. Satao Elerai Camp is located in a quiet, unspoilt, unique setting on a 5,000 acre private conservation area 12 km south east of Amboseli National Park, with perfect views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Amboseli National Park

2 nights at Satao Elerai Camp

After lunch, depart on an afternoon game drive with your driver-guide in the Elerai conservation area, offering grass plains and acacia woodland forest which are home to the large elephant bulls, as well as many giraffe, eland and a host of amazing bird life.

Day 3

After breakfast, depart for a full day game drive in the Amboseli National Park, stopping midway through the day for a picnic lunch. On today's game drive, as well as elephants, you can hopefully also encounter buffalo, wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, impala and warthog. Not surprisingly, never far away from these herds of grazers are lion, leopard, cheetah, jackal and hyena. The birdlife is also extremely good with over 400 bird species recorded, including over 40 birds of prey.

Day 4

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airstrip where you will board your flight back to Nairobi.

Safarilink 12 (Light Aircraft): Fly from Amboseli Airstrip departing at 09:05 to Wilson Airport (WIL), arriving at 09:50

You will be assisted to change light aircraft for your next flight down to the Masai Mara National Reserve.

Safarilink 01 (Light Aircraft): Fly from Wilson Airport (WIL) departing at 10:00 to Ol Kiombo Airstrip, arriving at 11:00

You will be met at the airstrip and transferred to your tented safari camp, arriving in time for lunch. In a spectacular location in the heart of the Masai Mara where the Talek River meets the Mara River and overlooking a hippo pool, you will find the intimate and luxurious Mara Ngenche Camp. The incredible surroundings of the Masai Mara make this a spectacular safari experience. Game drives are always thrilling and are guided by qualified local Masai guides in open-sided 4WDs, with a maximum of just 6 guests per vehicle.

After lunch, depart on a game drive with a Mara Ngenche guide (and other guests). The Masai Mara National Reserve is one of the most popular and most visited African game reserves. A true 'Out of Africa' safari destination, the reserve is mostly made up of open plains baked golden by the African sun.

Day 5

Depart today on 2 game drives - one in the morning; one in the afternoon - offering the unforgettable opportunity to enjoy the diversity of animals and birds living permanently in the Masai Mara, as well as many migratory bird species which are here from November through to April. Guests can also learn more about the Masai people, many of whom still retain their traditional nomadic lifestyle.

Day 6

Depart today on 2 more game drives - one in the morning; one in the afternoon. Also, during the months of August through to October, you may be able to witness the 'Great Migration', where literally thousands upon thousands of wildebeest, zebra and gazelles gather to graze on the central Mara plains, tired and exhausted after their long and arduous trek from the Serengeti plains in neighbouring Tanzania.

Day 7

After breakfast, you will be transferred back to the airstrip.

Safarilink 02 (Light Aircraft): Fly from Ol Kiombo Airstrip departing at 11:00 to Wilson Airport (WIL), arriving at 12:15

You will be assisted when you arrive back into Wilson for the connection onto your flight to Zanzibar.

Safarilink 57 (Economy Class): Fly from Nairobi Wilson (WIL) departing at 14:00 to Zanzibar (ZNZ), arriving at 15:45

Once you have collected your luggage, make your way out of the Arrivals Hall, where you will be met outside by your driver holding a sign with your name - there is normally a mass of drivers waiting so be prepared to search for the right sign board. You will then be transferred to your beach hotel.

Set on the northwestern coast of Zanzibar, Gold Zanzibar is situated overlooking a beautiful white powder sand beach lapped by the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. The elegant rooms, suites and villas all boast their own veranda with either ocean or garden views.

Day 14

You will need to check out of your room this morning but you can remain at the hotel and use all the facilities until you are collected for your transfer back to the airport. Alternatively, if you have an evening flight, the hotel may be able to arrange a late check out for you (additional cost and payable directly to the hotel) subject to the availability of the room.
