Fly In, Fly Out Gorilla Trekking

Summary Of The Route and Costs

If your sole aim is to track gorillas and tick this off your bucketlist, then this fly in, fly out 2 night trip is ideal for you. The short duration of your time in Uganda works perfectly as a combination with a safari in Kenya or Tanzania, as there are direct flights between Kenya's Masai Mara or Tanzania's Serengeti Park with Entebbe, making this gorilla trip a perfect add on to a longer holiday in East Africa.

The itinerary includes return flights with Aerolink from Entebbe to Kihihi, which is the airstrip you fly to and then transfer by road to your lodge in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Forest.

The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is home to around half of the world's mountain gorilla population. Having trekked through the forest and located your gorilla family, you have one precious hour to spend with them. This will be one of the most memorable, exciting and poignant wildlife encounters you will ever experience - a true bucketlist achievement.

The lodge featured in this itinerary is Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp. Just a short walk from where you start your gorilla trek from, each of the 8 luxury tented rooms has a spacious, stone-walled bathroom with a free-standing bath for a relaxing soak after a day's trekking. In the evening, gather with fellow guests around the central campfire under star-strewn skies and accompanied by the night chorus, relive again and again the day’s adventures.

However, you will see a tab on the right hand side of the screen called Alternative Options - clicking on this will take you through to more detail about 3 other lodges and will show you the impact on the price if you include a 2 night stay at any of these instead.

Also situated very near to the start of the trek, Mahogany Springs has 12 luxurious suites which each have their own private terrace with magnificent panoramic views over the grounds, river and surrounding areas.

Buhoma Lodge is set within the National Park and is the perfect lodge of choice when embarking on your bucket-list gorilla trekking adventure. Tranquil and cosy, the 10 spacious eco-friendly wooden chalets offer a private escape.

Bwindi Lodge has dramatic views of the forest canopy across a serene stream. The 8 individual bandas each have their own view of the forest and have warm luxurious interiors, inviting 4 poster beds and locally-inspired furniture.

There is also, of course, the option to add another night to your lodge stay, making a 3 night visit - which will give you the opportunity to trek the gorillas again on your full second day here. Quotes available on request.

Summary Of The Itinerary

Holiday Title: Fly In, Fly Out Gorilla Trekking

Countries Visited: Uganda

Day 1

Arrive into Entebbe Airport. Having gone through Immigration and Customs, you will make your way to the Aerolink check in desk for your flight to Kihihi - the airstrip for the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

AeroLink Seat in Plane Rate (Light Aircraft): Fly from Entebbe Intl (EBB) departing at 12:00 to Kihihi Airstrip, arriving at 14:40

You will be met on arrival at Kihihi and transferred to your lodge (about a 90 road transfer). Once-in-a-lifetime encounters with Uganda's endangered gorillas await when you stay at Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, in the heart of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The camp blends in with the dramatic African mountain landscape and you are only minutes away from the start of your gorilla trekking adventure. This afternoon, you can relax at the camp or enjoy a community walk to the local Batwa community, passing through a small tea farming project en-route where you can meet the tea pickers, then visit a beer brewery to see how they make banana beer, before visiting the traditional medicine man of the village. Keen birders can arrange a walk with a local guide to search out some of the 350 bird species that live in the Bwindi Forest.

Day 2

Today you depart after an early breakfast for your gorilla trek. The gorillas are completely wild but have become used to seeing a few humans after years of habituation. Many of the expert guides have been involved in this process since the beginning and are able to explain the complicated etiquette involved in meeting a giant Silverback. This is an opportunity afforded only to a select few, as just 8 visitors are allowed to view each group every day. Tracking through dense forest with steep slopes means that participants do need to be physically fit to enjoy the track. Once the gorillas are located, you will spend a maximum of one hour with them before returning back to camp.

Day 3

After breakfast you will be transferred back to the airstrip where you will board your flight to Entebbe.

AeroLink Seat in Plane Rate (Light Aircraft): Fly from Kihihi Airstrip departing at 09:45 to Entebbe Intl (EBB), arriving at 11:15

Check in for your international flight. Depending on the time of the international flight, there may be an opportunity to do an afternoon activity (additional cost), such as visit the Mbamba Swamps in search of the elusive shoebill, or visit the chimpanzee sanctuary on Ngamba Island.
