Affordable Botswana

There are still ways to explore and enjoy Botswana, even if you are on a budget.

Travelling during the Emerald Season (November to end March), for example, is a way to take advantage of the low rates offered during this period, and some great savings can be made on camps throughout Botswana.

Emerald Season in the Okavango Delta Many camps also do away with single supplements over this period, making this an attractive time to take a trip if you are a solo traveller.

The season is called the 'Emerald' season because the summer rains fall, turning the landscape into various tones of green. December, January and February tend to see the highest rainfall.

Many species of wildlife such as springbok, impala, kudu and waterbuck give birth to their young during these months, resulting in an active time for predators too as they take advantage of the wobbly newborns.

Migrant bird species such as bee-eaters and kingfishers also arrive back, plus several birds display their beautiful breeding plummage, resulting in a blaze of colour throughout the bush and making this a superb time to experience Africa's amazing birdlife.

Another plus of travelling during the Emerald Season is that you do get fewer visitors - so this gives you a greater chance of having a sighting to yourself!

Equally, there are some camps and lodges that even outside of this low priced period are still incredibly good value for money. Whilst they may not have the fine trimmings of the grander 5* rated camps, they still offer a comfortable safari stay. Game drives still head out twice daily with experienced rangers, your bathroom is en-suite, and the service is friendly and welcoming.
