Within just a couple of hours drive of Durban are some of South Africa's most fascinating destinations.
Whilst it would be conceivable to visit the Drakensberg, KZN Battlefields, or one of the KZN game reserves on a day trip from the city, this would be a wasted opportunity as these are far better appreciated by staying for a few nights in each area.
There are, however, a number of worthwhile excursions close to the city that can either be done as part of an organised trip or by yourself.
The Valley of a Thousand Hills and the PheZulu Safari Park are a particularly popular combination for a full day of self-drive exploration.
Valley of a Thousand Hills
Visitors from the UK or New Zealand will find the landscape of the (optimistically named) Valley of a Thousand Hills very familiar.
Rolling green hills scattered with small villages make this a pleasurable landscape to meander through and enjoy at your leisure.
The first English settlers began to pioneer routes inland from the coast during the early 1830s, and the Valley of a Thousand Hills was the first overnight stop.
A small 'hospitality industry' began, and has continued to grow and thrive ever since.
The Paradise Valley Nature Reserve has several walking trails through the bush, and a number of waterfalls and scenic spots.
PheZulu Safari Park
PheZulu is a purpose built Zulu 'village' only 35km from Durban, which offers a theatrical telling of the history of South Africa's people, a tour of a Zulu village, and an exhibition of traditional Zulu dancing, all set against a magnificent view over the Valley of a Thousand Hills.
There are 2 restaurants - a traditional boma-style restaurant or another where you can get anything from a cheese sandwich to a crocodile steak.
Admission also includes the Crocodile and Snake Farm, which is on the same site. Don't be fooled into thinking you will see any wildlife, however - it is not a safari park in that sense of the word!
Ghandi's Home
Ghandi spent much of his early career as a lawyer in South Africa, and his first home in the country was only a short drive from central Durban.
Unfortunately, the original building was burned to the ground during rioting in the 1980's. A replica building has been built on the same site, and this is now being turned into a museum.
There is an extensive photographic record of this extraordinary man's life, although not much else actually remains from his time in South Africa.
