'Damaraland' was the apartheid name for the region allocated to the Damara people by the South African government before Namibia gained independence.
It is now officially part of the new Kunene region, along with the area formally known as Kaokoland, however the vast majority of people still refer to both regions by their old names.
Despite its many attractions, Damaraland remains one of Namibia's less visited areas. There are organised overland and fly-in safari's that include Damaraland on their itineraries, however, many self-drive visitors exclude this beautiful region - which is such a shame.
Self-Drive
Most of the main attractions are serviced by good roads and visitors with a 2WD car would be very unlucky to find that a road was impassable.
Seasonal rivers that cross roads are dependant on the rainfall before flowing above ground, and even then, they normally only flow for a few days before drying up again.
Many of the best lodges in the area are only accessible by 4WD, but it is usually possible to drive to a secure parking area in a 2WD vehicle and be collected by the lodge from there.
Other Considerations
Petrol is available at most towns in Damaraland, however the distances between petrol stops can be great and you should plan your route to ensure you pass within a reasonable distance of fuel stops at regular intervals.
As a general rule, we suggest you fill up every time you are near a petrol station. Ideally, carry a spare can of petrol with you as well.
Cell or mobile phone coverage outside of the major population centres is non-existent.
The only ATM that we are aware of in the region is at the Standard Bank in Khorixas, and this is often out of order. Make sure you have sufficient cash for your trip through Damaraland.
This is a low risk malaria area, so precautions should be taken.
Under most circumstances, even in the rainy season, a 4WD is not required, but a high-clearance 2WD is a good idea and many people prefer the peace of mind (and adventure!) of a 4WD.
