Ai-Ais Hot Springs Resort
Introduction
At the southern end of the Fish River Canyon is the Ai-Ais Hot Springs resort, which is owned and run by Namibia Wildlife Resorts.
'Ai-Ais' in Nama means 'burning water', and this is an extremely apt name, as the thermal water can reach temperatures of up to 65°C.
The water is pumped into indoor baths, a jacuzzi, and a large outdoor swimming pool. The water is high in minerals, and has a reputedly healing affect for rheumatism sufferers.
Open all year round, this is a popular family destination for South Africans and Namibians, especially during school holidays.
More about the Resort
The resort also has tennis courts, a restaurant, a snack bar which sells cold drinks including beer during the day, and a small shop.
It is fair to say, however, that the overall look of the resort unfortunately resembles a 1970s municipal swimming pool.
One reputable guide book refers to the accommodation as 'tired' - we would suggest 'absolutely exhausted' - which unfortunately does not make it the most comfortable place to spend a couple of nights. The rooms, although clean, are very basic, and in desperate need of some paint and new furniture.
A far better option is to stay at one of the highly recommended lodges at the northern end of the Fish River Canyon, which is about an hour drive along a good gravel road, and visit Ai-Ais as a day trip only.
Hiking from the Resort
The only real advantage of staying at the resort itself is to go on a short hike into the Canyon, following the path of the Fish River.
Hiking from the northern end of the Canyon is not permitted unless you are undertaking the 4 day / 85 km hike, so for many people this is the closest that they will get to walking in the Canyon.
Within just a short distance, you are out of sight of the resort, and although this is not the deepest part of the Canyon by a long distance (85 km to be precise!), there is still a great sense of vastness, emptiness, and tranquillity.
Make sure that you take plenty of water, even if you are planning only to walk for an hour out and back again. Ideally, try to plan to go on your walk early morning or late afternoon, to avoid the intense midday sun.
