Money

Introduction

Namibia's currency is the Namibian Dollar (N$)  and does not float on the currency markets, but is tied to the South African Rand (R) at a rate of 1:1.

The Rand is widely accepted throughout the country, and even if you pay using all Namibian notes you will often get a mixture of N$ and Rand in your change.

Whilst Rands are widely accepted in Namibia, the same cannot be said of Namibian Dollars in South Africa - so try to ensure you get rid of your Namibian currency before heading south!

Current tourist exchange rates to the GB £ Sterling can be found at www.moneyextra.com.

Bank Notes and Getting Cash

Namibian bank notes come in N$10, N$20, N$50, N$100 and N$200 denominations.

There are 100 cents to N$1.  Coin values are 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, N$1 and N$5.

namibian_banknotesThere is a wide network of ATMs (cash points) throughout the country, allowing travellers with a Cirrus or Maestro affiliated card to withdraw money direct from their regular current account.

Credit card withdrawals can also be made at many of these machines, but note that charges are far higher for these than for Cirrus or Maestro transactions.

Credit cards are accepted in most hotels, lodges, restaurants and shops.  However, all petrol stations require petrol purchases to be made in cash.  Many larger petrol stations have an ATM on site, although we recommend you always have some cash set aside for petrol.

Travellers cheques in US$, Euro, and GB £ Sterling can be exchanged at most banks.
