Only 115 km further away is the small coastal town of Lüderitz, sandwiched between the South Atlantic Ocean and the sand dunes of the Namib desert.
Its eclectic collection of colourful Bavarian / German colonial style architecture, complete with turrets, gables and bay windows adds to the town's surreal atmosphere.
The drive around the Lüderitz Peninsula, just south of the town, is a pleasant way to spend a few hours, and many visitors head for Dias Point, where Bartolomeu Dias later erected a cross at the place where he first landed on Christmas Day 1487.
Namibia's most visited ghost town, Kolmanskop, lies 10 km inland from Lüderitz. Once a bustling boom town built on the success of the diamond mining, now it is deserted except for the sand which is slowly engulfing the houses and buildings.
It is truly a photographer's dream, and the twice daily guided tours are a fascinating insight into the history of how the quality of the small town's facilities and houses reflected the fortunes that were being made from the diamond trade.
