Facts for the Visitor

Introduction

Namibia is BIG and sparsely populated - only 1.5 million people live in an area which is 4 times larger than the UK (or bigger than France and Germany combined).

namibia mapWhilst it is generally a very easy and safe place to travel, the vast distances, poor gravel roads in more remote places and the unforgiving desert heat do need to be respected and precautions taken. See our Driving and Climate pages for more information.

Visitors from most European countries as well as the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days.

More visa information and links to Government travel advice can be found on our Visa & Travel Advice page.

The Namibian Dollar (N$) is not freely exchangeable outside of the country, so you will not be able to get local currency before you arrive.

Namibian bank notesThe N$ is, however, linked to the South African Rand at a rate of 1:1, and Rand are accepted by all businesses throughout Namibia at this rate. Our Money page has more details and current exchange rates for the Rand.

There is a good mobile phone network along some major routes and in towns and cities, however, the vast majority of the country is not covered. More details on Phone Networks and Internet availability is available on this site.
