Toka Leya Camp

Victoria Falls - Zambia: 2 Nights

Overlooking the mighty Zambezi River and some of its islands, Toka Leya Camp is situated in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, just 12 km from the world famous Victoria Falls.

Toka Leya’s location on the banks of the Zambezi River and proximity to Victoria Falls ensures a variety of water and land-based safari and adventure activities.

Game drives into Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park offer sightings of general game species such as elephant, buffalo, giraffe and white rhino. There is also rich birdlife, including sought-after species such as half-collared kingfisher and Schalow’s turaco.

Whether a relaxing sunset cruise or a game viewing cruise, there are scenic views and exciting wildlife to be enjoyed from the comfort of a spacious boat. There's always an abundance of hippo and crocodile, as well as a few other surprises along the way.

Cultural visits to one of the nearby villages of Sinde or Simonga are respectful and insightful ways of learning about and interacting with the people and culture of this part of Zambia.

Twelve spacious en-suite safari-style tents (including 3 family tents) with expansive decks soak up the dramatic views and active wildlife. Wooden walkways snake between the units and main area, limiting our footprint on this pristine area.

The camp’s dining, lounge and bar areas offer ample space for relaxation and are complemented by an infinity pool, with meals served on the sundeck, the pool deck and dining room all overlooking the Zambezi. The novel pizza oven is a great hit with younger visitors!

Kings Pool Camp

Linyanti: 3 Nights

Kings Pool Camp is located in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, a vast private concession in the northern part of Botswana, on the western boundary of Chobe National Park. The accommodation here is luxurious, the wildlife spectacular.

Kings Pool Camp overlooks the Linyanti River and the oxbow-shaped Kings Pool Lagoon, apparently named after a Scandinavian monarch who spent a number of nights camping out on the banks of the lagoon, long before any camp was built here.

The Linyanti area has a large wildlife resource with a wide variety of species, but it is most noted for its very large elephant population, which can reach enormous densities during the dry winter months. Other game is abundant, such as impala, lechwe, kudu, zebra, giraffe, buffalo and bushbuck, and their predators: lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and spotted hyaena. Rarer species such as sable and roan antelope emerge from the woodlands during the dry season.

Activities include day and night game drives and walks, while boat cruises along the Linyanti River (water levels allowing) offer spectacular viewing. The reed and papyrus swamps are ideal for numerous and diverse species of birds and are a magnet for game in the dry winter months. Scenic helicopter flights can also be arranged, offering a truly unique way to experience the wonders of the Linyanti.

Nine well-appointed tents of canvas and thatch each have a large bedroom area, lounge, private plunge pool and 'sala'. The spacious en-suite bathrooms are tiled with double showers and hand-basins as well as an outdoor shower for those who wish to shower close to nature!

Raised walkways allow animals to wander freely through the camp to and from the water.

The lounge, dining room and pub areas are on expansive raised decks and there is a pool and an open-air 'kgotla' for dining under the stars.

Mombo Camp

Okavango Delta: 3 Nights

Mombo Camp has arguably the best big game viewing in Africa. Located in the Mombo Concession on Chief's Island in the heart of the Okavango Delta, the sheer numbers and variety of wildlife all year round defy description. This is the Africa only seen in documentaries: from elephant to buffalo to tiny steenbok, vast herds of herbivores are trailed by numerous predators on the hunt. The best big game viewing experience starts on the veranda at Mombo Camp, with unbelievable concentrations of game occurring right in front of the camp. Guests often find animals wandering past, right under their rooms.

Activities at Mombo Camp include morning and afternoon game drives (night drives are not permitted). Open 4x4 vehicles seating just 4 guests provide an exquisite vantage for viewing the high concentrations of plains game and all the predators - including the big cats. Lion sightings are frequent. Guests at Mombo Camp can also expect to see leopard, wild dog, spotted hyena, large herds of buffalo, elephant, white rhino, southern giraffe, blue wildebeest and Burchell's zebra.

Built under large, shady trees and overlooking the floodplains which teem with wildlife all year round, Mombo Camp comprises 8 spacious tents (one of which is a family tent) raised a couple of meters from the ground. Bathrooms are en-suite, with both indoor and outdoor showers.

Magnificent vistas are the order of the day, with all the rooms, the sala, long veranda and lounge area all taking advantage of the very best that the Okavango Delta has to offer.

Mombo Camp's main living and dining areas are under thatch, but a boma makes for a delicious dinner under the stars. There is also a plunge pool in which to relax.

Abu Camp

Okavango Delta: 2 Nights

Abu Camp, set in a pristine pocket of riverine forest, is situated in a vast private reserve of 180,000 hectares in the heart of the Okavango Delta, on the edge of a large lagoon with a resident school of hippo.

Abu offers the extraordinary privilege of enabling guests to interact with the resident elephant herd during their stay - watching the evening feeding, accompanying them on foot as they move through the bush, and sharing the simple joy of a frolicking youngster. These elephant encounters provide unforgettable magical moments. In addition, Abu’s one-of-a-kind Star Bed is set over the herd’s boma and guests can spend a night here, being lulled to sleep listening to the elephants’ rumbling snores below.

The camp also offers morning and afternoon game drives, night drives and nature walks to view the abundance of fauna and flora in the area. During the seasonal floods of the Okavango Delta, guests are invited to take to the waters in the mokoros, the traditional poled craft used in the Okavango Delta.

Abu’s 6 luxurious, explorer-style tents blend seamlessly into their natural surroundings. Each has a tree-shaded deck with a private plunge pool overlooking a lagoon.

Well-lit pathways link the tents with the main lounge and dining area. There is also a well-stocked library and study, and a small gym for the energetic. The well-stocked bar provides drinks and cocktails for post-safari sundowners around a camp fire while most of the meals are taken al fresco on the deck. Nearby a secluded pool enables guests to cool off and relax.

Important Travel Information For Zambia

Passport, Visa and Entry Requirements

Certain nationalities require a visa to enter Zambia - these include nationalities from the UK, USA, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand. If you are a passport holder from another country, please contact your local Zambia High Commission or Embassy for up-to-date visa requirements or check this website: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_policy_of_Zambia

The visa can issued at any Zambia Embassy or on arrival at an entry point, or you can now obtain an e-Visa prior to travel via https://evisa.zambiaimmigration.gov.zm/#/.  Single and double entry visit visas are available at all ports of entry, but multi-entry visas are not. If you plan to get a visa on arrival, make sure you have the correct amount of cash (US dollars) with you as change may not be available.

Current visa costs (subject to change) are as follows: Single Entry Visa USD 50 per person; Double/Multipe Entry Visa USD 80 per person; Day Tripper Visa USD 20 per person (enter and exit through same port); Transit Visa USD 50 per person.

If you enter through Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka or the Harry Mwanga International Airport in Livingstone, you can now make payment for single and double entry visas via credit card at the Zambian Immigration desks.

For visitors wanting to travel across to Zimbabwe, the KAZA UniVisa is also an option (although unfortunately this is not always available). This visa allows tourists of certain nationalities to travel freely between Zambia and Zimbabwe, within a 30 day period from the date of their first entry. This same visa will also allow those who cross into Botswana for a day trip to come back into Zambia (or Zimbabwe) without paying any extra visa fees - please note however it is not valid if staying in Botswana overnight. The UniVisa can ONLY be obtained at SELECTED border posts (currently Harry Mwaanga/Livingstone Airport, Victoria Falls Land Border, Kazungula Land Border (border with Botswana) and Kenneth Kaunda/Lusaka Airport) - the current price is USD 50 per person (subject to change) and payable in cash. To check whether you are eligible for this visa, please visit https://www.zambiaimmigration.gov.zm/kaza-univisa/.

For everyone entering Zambia, your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry and have at least 2 blank pages for entry/exit stamps.

PLEASE NOTE: Countries can change their entry requirements at any time. Travel Butlers try to ensure that the information displayed here is correct, but the onus remains with the traveller to verify the information with the relevant High Commission or Embassy and ensure that they can comply with current passport and visa requirements.

Medical

You are advised to contact your doctor or clinic around 4-8 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations and to get their professional medical advice regarding travel to Zambia.

To help prevent diarrhoea, avoid tap water – drink only bottled water and use bottled water for tooth brushing, and avoid ice made with tap water – and only eat fruit or vegetables that are cooked or can be peeled. To help avoid heatstroke, drink plenty of bottled water/fluids, and keep out of the midday sun.

There is no risk of yellow fever in Zambia, so a yellow fever vaccination is NOT required for travellers whose sole destination is Zambia. However, in accordance with International Health Regulations, Zambia requires all travellers over one year of age arriving from a yellow fever risk country, or having been in transit longer than 12 hours at the airport of such a country, to have a yellow fever certificate. These countries include Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda.

There is a risk of malaria in all areas of Zambia - check with your doctor about suitable antimalarial tablets. Dengue fever can also be transmitted via mosquito bites. Try to avoid mosquito bites wherever possible - wear loose long-sleeved clothing and trousers, and use a repellent on clothing and exposed skin.

Tsetse flies are found throughout some of Zambia's National Parks, especially in the Luangwa Valley and Kafue National Park. There have been some cases of sleeping sickness occurring after a tsetse fly bite, although these are mainly amongst farmers and other locals who have repeated exposure to bites. However, the fly can still deliver a painful bite, so it is advisable to take necessary precautions - don't wear dark colours, especially black and blue (including denim), wear long-sleeved clothing and trousers, and don't walk through bushes during the hottest part of the day.

If you are a passport holder from another country, please contact your local Botswana High Commission or Embassy for up-to-date visa requirements, as citizens of certain countries are required to obtain visas before travelling. Please note that if you are applying to the Embassy for your visa, some visas can take a long time to be processed so please do take this into consideration, as it is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct visa in place before you travel.

Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Botswana and have sufficient blank pages for the Botswana entry/exit stamps (at least 2).

TRAVELLING TO/FROM BOTSWANA WITH CHILDREN YOUNGER THAN 18 YEARS OF AGE AT DATE OF TRAVEL: The following requirements apply regardless of nationality. Parents travelling with children must produce an unabridged birth certificate for the child, showing full details of the child's parents. If the birth certificate is in a language other than English, it must be accompanied by a sworn translation issued by a competent authority in the country concerned. If the child is adopted, the adoption certificate must be produced. If only one parent is travelling, said parent must also show consent in the form of an affidavit from the other parent named on the birth certificate authorising the child to travel (the affidavit must be no more than 6 months old from the date of travel), or a court order granting full parental responsibilities to the travelling parent, or (where applicable) a death certificate for the deceased parent. Legally separated parents should also provide a court order when the other parent does not give consent. Where a person is travelling with a child who is not their biological child, he/she must produce an unabridged birth certificate for the child supplemented by affidavits from the child's parents/legal guardian giving consent for the child to travel and copies of the identity documents or passport of the parents/legal guardian PLUS their contact details. In the case of foreign countries that do not issue unabridged birth certificates, a letter to this effect issued by the competent authority of the foreign country should be produced. For more information, please contact your Botswana High Commission.

Please note that plastic bags are banned in Botswana. This ban is primarily aimed to reduce plastic in commercial use (as opposed to tourists bringing in plastic bags to carry personal property), however, we would strongly recommend guests avoid bringing plastic bags into the country if possible.

PLEASE NOTE: Countries can change their entry requirements at any time. Travel Butlers try to ensure that the information displayed here is correct, but the onus remains with the traveller to verify the information with the relevant High Commission or Embassy and ensure that they can comply with current passport and visa requirements.
