Toka Leya Camp

Victoria Falls - Zambia: 2 Nights

Overlooking the mighty Zambezi River and some of its islands, Toka Leya Camp is situated in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, just 12 km from the world famous Victoria Falls.

Toka Leya’s location on the banks of the Zambezi River and proximity to Victoria Falls ensures a variety of water and land-based safari and adventure activities.

Game drives into Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park offer sightings of general game species such as elephant, buffalo, giraffe and white rhino. There is also rich birdlife, including sought-after species such as half-collared kingfisher and Schalow’s turaco.

Whether a relaxing sunset cruise or a game viewing cruise, there are scenic views and exciting wildlife to be enjoyed from the comfort of a spacious boat. There's always an abundance of hippo and crocodile, as well as a few other surprises along the way.

Cultural visits to one of the nearby villages of Sinde or Simonga are respectful and insightful ways of learning about and interacting with the people and culture of this part of Zambia.

Twelve spacious en-suite safari-style tents (including 3 family tents) with expansive decks soak up the dramatic views and active wildlife. Wooden walkways snake between the units and main area, limiting our footprint on this pristine area.

King's Pool Camp

Linyanti: 3 Nights

King's Pool Camp is located in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, a vast private concession in the northern part of Botswana, on the western boundary of Chobe National Park. The accommodation here is luxurious, the wildlife spectacular. The camp overlooks the Linyanti River and the oxbow-shaped Kings Pool Lagoon, apparently named after a Scandinavian monarch who spent a number of nights camping out on the banks of the lagoon, long before any camp was built here.

The Linyanti area has a large wildlife resource with a wide variety of species, but it is most noted for its very large elephant population, which can reach enormous densities during the dry winter months. Other game is abundant, such as impala, lechwe, kudu, zebra, giraffe, buffalo and bushbuck, and their predators: lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and spotted hyaena. Rarer species such as sable and roan antelope emerge from the woodlands during the dry season.

Activities include day and night game drives and walks, while boat cruises along the Linyanti River (water levels allowing) offer spectacular viewing. The reed and papyrus swamps are ideal for numerous and diverse species of birds and are a magnet for game in the dry winter months. Scenic helicopter flights can also be arranged, offering a truly unique way to experience the wonders of the Linyanti. There are also two hides in the vicinity of the camp from which to view and photograph animals and birds.

Seven well-appointed tents of canvas and thatch each have a large bedroom area, lounge, private plunge pool and 'sala'. The spacious en-suite bathrooms are tiled with double showers and hand-basins as well as an outdoor shower for those who wish to shower close to nature!

In addition, there is the King's Pool Suite which consists of 2 separate en-suite rooms (one room is slightly smaller than the other) which share a private plunge pool and an outdoor sunken lounge - an ideal choice for families of for parties of 4 adults travelling together - or even for a couple preferring more space.

Raised walkways allow animals to wander freely through the camp to and from the water. The lounge, dining room and pub areas are on expansive raised decks and there is a pool and an open-air 'kgotla' for dining under the stars.

Mombo Camp

Okavango Delta: 3 Nights

Built under large, shady trees and overlooking floodplains which teem with wildlife all year round, Mombo Camp has arguably some of the best big game viewing in Africa.

Located in the Mombo Concession on Chief's Island in the heart of the Okavango Delta, the sheer numbers and variety of wildlife all year round defy description. This is the Africa only seen in documentaries - from elephant to buffalo to tiny steenbok, and where vast herds of herbivores are trailed by numerous predators on the hunt.

Activities at Mombo Camp include morning and afternoon game drives (night drives are not permitted). Open 4x4 vehicles seating just 4 guests provide an exquisite vantage for viewing the high concentrations of plains game and all the predators. Lion sightings are frequent, and guests may also see leopard, spotted hyena, cheetah, wild dogs, large herds of buffalo, elephant, white rhino, southern giraffe, blue wildebeest and Burchell's zebra.

The best game viewing experience, however, sometimes can start on the main viewing deck at the camp itself, as unbelievable concentrations of game occurs right in front of the camp. Guests can also absorb the spectacular views from the dining room, bar, sitting area or the inviting plunge pool. Delicious meals are served under the stars.

The camp has 8 elegant and spacious tents (one of which is a family tent) raised a couple of meters from the ground, all with sweeping views over the floodplain. The tent's sitting room, separate bedroom and bathroom, indoor and outdoor showers and bathtub with copper and brass fittings all contribute to a truly luxurious feel. Each tent is connected by a raised wooden walkway.

Guests can get their exercise for the day (complete with unbeatable bush views) in the gym or pool, or enjoy a more relaxing time being pampered by one of the expert massage therapists in the comfort of your room or private deck.

Abu Camp

Okavango Delta: 2 Nights

Abu Camp, set in a pristine pocket of riverine forest, is situated in a vast private reserve of 180,000 hectares in the heart of the Okavango Delta, on the edge of a large lagoon with a resident school of hippo.

The essence of the Abu Camp experience is exploring the unspoiled wilderness of the Delta. The Abu Private Reserve varies from open grasslands to secluded island sanctuaries, and papyrus-fringed channels. This variety of natural habitats allows for an abundance of wildlife. Predator sightings may include African wild dog, and cheetah, with lion sometimes heard calling at night. Hyena, and leopard are resident, so are encountered more frequently. Other iconic Okavango species regularly sighted include elephant, wildebeest, buffalo, impala, tsessebe, red lechwe, warthog, giraffe, and zebra. The birding around Widerness Abu Camp is spectacular, and particularly exciting species may include malachite kingfisher, white-browed coucal, pied kingfisher, rufous-bellied heron, and southern ground hornbill.

The camp offers morning and afternoon game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, and guests can also walk in the bush (season and subject to the availability of a qualified walking guide) with an experienced guide which is one of the most exciting ways of viewing game, as well as appreciating the flora and the smaller mammals and insects. During the seasonal floods of the Okavango Delta, guests are invited to take to the waters in the mokoros, the traditional poled craft used in the Okavango Delta.

Abu’s 6 luxurious, explorer-style tents blend seamlessly into their natural surroundings. Each has a tree-shaded deck with a private plunge pool overlooking a lagoon.

Well-lit pathways link the tents with the main lounge and dining area. There is also a well-stocked library and study, and a small gym for the energetic. The well-stocked bar provides drinks and cocktails for post-safari sundowners around a camp fire while most of the meals are taken al fresco on the deck. Nearby a secluded pool enables guests to cool off and relax.

Medical

You are advised to contact your doctor or clinic around 4-8 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations and to get their professional medical advice regarding travel to Zambia.

To help prevent diarrhoea, avoid tap water – drink only bottled water and use bottled water for tooth brushing, and avoid ice made with tap water – and only eat fruit or vegetables that are cooked or can be peeled.

To help avoid heatstroke, drink plenty of bottled water/fluids, and keep out of the midday sun.

There is no risk of yellow fever in Zambia, so a yellow fever vaccination is NOT required for travellers whose sole destination is Zambia. However, in accordance with International Health Regulations, Zambia requires all travellers over one year of age arriving from a yellow fever risk country, or having been in transit longer than 12 hours at the airport of such a country, to have a yellow fever certificate. These countries include Kenya and Uganda but it is up to the traveller to check the full list here https://nathnacyfzone.org.uk/factsheet/60/yellow-fever-maps

There is a risk of malaria in all areas of Zambia - check with your doctor about suitable antimalarial tablets. Dengue fever can also be transmitted via mosquito bites. Try to avoid mosquito bites wherever possible - wear loose long-sleeved clothing and trousers, and use a repellent on clothing and exposed skin.

Tsetse flies are found throughout some of Zambia's National Parks, especially in the Luangwa Valley and Kafue National Park. There have been some cases of sleeping sickness occurring after a tsetse fly bite, although these are mainly amongst farmers and other locals who have repeated exposure to bites. However, the fly can still deliver a painful bite, so it is advisable to take necessary precautions - don't wear dark colours, especially black and blue (including denim), wear long-sleeved clothing and trousers, and don't walk through bushes during the hottest part of the day.

Languages And Culture

The official language of Zambia is English. Commonly-spoken indigenous languages number over 70 and include Lamba, Kaonde, Tumbuka, Ngoni, Ila,Senga, Chewa, Chibemba, Nsenga Chinyanja, Lunda, Chitonga, Kaonde, Silozi, Nkoya, and Luvale.

We would ask that all travellers are respectful of the local culture as follows:

Homosexuality is illegal in Zambia. Whilst everyone is of course entitled to their own sexual preferences and gender identity, we would advise all clients of the LGBT+ community to refrain from public displays of affection (including kissing and holding hands) and to be as discrete as possible about their relationship.

You should always ask permission before taking anyone’s photograph.

Avoid taking pictures of sensitive sites including power stations, explosives factories, pumping stations, army barracks, government buildings, river junctions, road and rail bridges, the Ndola Oil refinery, mining areas and airports. If in doubt, don’t take pictures.

United Kingdom; United States of America; Canada; Australia; New Zealand; Ireland; Belgium; Netherlands; Italy; France; Germany; Norway; Spain; South Africa.

If you are a passport holder from another country,  you can check to see if you require a visa and apply for an eVisa here: https://evisa.gov.bw/#/home.

Nobody can be certain exactly what will happen in the future, however Travel Butlers can offer you peace of mind and flexibility to ensure that you feel confident booking a holiday with us.

Flexibility and peace of mind before you travel

Our team are specialists in travel to Africa and the Indian Ocean, and we are constantly monitoring the changing situation regarding travel to the region. If your trip cannot go ahead due to specific travel restrictions related to Covid-19 then we will get in touch to offer you the choice of the following:

The specific Covid-19 travel restrictions are defined as follows:

We would not normally be able to confirm that your trip cannot proceed due to travel restrictions until a couple of weeks before the start of your trip, however should you want to look at postponing or altering your trip before then we would aim to be as flexible as possible.

If we confirm that your trip is unable to proceed due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, then we will not charge you an amendment fee if you choose to postpone your trip or move it to another destination. We may need to adjust the cost of your trip to reflect the new dates, particularly if those coincide with a more expensive season of travel or higher grade of accommodation. Equally, if the cost of your postponed trip is less, we will reduce the cost accordingly.

You should still take out travel insurance that includes Covid-19  to cover you in the event that your trip can go ahead but you are unable to travel due to illness or a change in your personal circumstances. If there are no travel restrictions in place that mean your trip could not go ahead but you need to cancel due to illness or a change in your personal circumstances then our normal terms and conditions would apply. You should ensure that your travel insurance provides adequate cover for cancelling due to illness, including Covid-19, and you may be able to make a claim against your travel insurance depending on the cover offered by your policy.

We offer 24/7 telephone assistance to all our clients whilst they are away, and also have partners in each country that are able to assist with any PCR tests or other issues that might arise during your trip.

If you fall ill whilst you are away, or if your trip is disrupted due to Covid-19 whilst you are travelling, then our experienced team will be on hand to assist you in whatever way you need.  You would need to pay any additional costs incurred due to illness or travel disruption whilst you are away, however you may be able reclaim these expenses on your travel insurance depending on the cover offered by your policy.  Travel Butlers will be able to assist by providing supporting documentation for your claim.
