Flatdogs Camp

South Luangwa National Park: 2 Nights

Flatdogs Camp is situated in the South Luangwa National Park, one of the last great wildlife wonders of the world. The Park is just over 9,000 square kilometers of pristine wilderness, and has been visited by wildlife enthusiasts from all over the world since its creation as a National Park in 1972. The Luangwa offers a safari experience unmatched by any other destination.

Game drives are taken with a fully-qualified guide in 4x4 Toyota Land Cruisers. Most of the vehicles can carry 9 guests but the camp prefers to limit numbers to 6 per vehicle unless larger groups or families prefer to go out together.

Between 1st June and 31st October each year (and for a few weeks either side, depending on rainfall) the camp is also able to offer walking safaris. Walks usually last for 3 to 4 hours and are commonly taken in the morning when it's cooler.

Flatdogs is also heavily involved with the local life of Mfuwe village, and guests can take an informal trip into the village to get a taste of local life and to see some of the community projects that the camp work on.

The 6 regular chalet rooms are situated in 3 separate buildings. Each chalet building has a downstairs double room with en-suite bathroom and an upstairs twin/triple room with their own bathroom, just downstairs from the bedroom. The 2 rooms in each building are completely separate with their own facilities, but can be joined through the small kitchen area if a family or groups of friends want to book both rooms.

On the banks of the Luangwa, with the best views in camp, are the 7 luxury en-suite safari tents, and there are an additional 3 standard en-suite safari tents nearby (one overlooking the lagoon and 2 looking out onto the river).

The 2 bedroomed Jackalberry Treehouse is completely separate and private, and built around 3 live African ebony trees with unspoilt views out across a waterhole which is regularly visited by elephant and giraffe. The treehouse is available only during the dry season, from 5th April to 15th November each year.

The tented 2 bedroom Croc Nest has been set on a deck looking onto the banks of the Luangwa River. Guests staying here will also have a private guide and their own safari vehicle so they can plan their activities depending on their particular interests.

Nkonzi Camp

South Luangwa National Park: 4 Nights

Nkonzi Camp is a beautiful rustic bush camp set deep inside the South Luangwa National Park. The camp is a 45 minute drive from the South Luangwa main gate, set beside the dry Mushilashi River. Surrounded by pristine indigenous woodland and grassy plains, Nkonzi Camp is the perfect location for game viewing activities, and is ideally positioned for stargazing with zero light pollution and panoramic views of the breathtaking African night sky and the milky way that have to be seen to be believed.

Guests eat meals together in a shady grove of mature trees, and the small honesty bar serves beer, soft drinks and selected spirits.

Walking safaris are a speciality here - the all day expeditions begin and end at camp, starting early in the morning and returning in the evening. Unique bush breakfasts, cooked over an open fire in the morning light, are a true highlight of your stay here. The experience of tracking wild animals on foot is a memory that will stay with you forever.

Game drives (both day and night) are also an option, heading in any direction north, east, south or west into untouched wildlife habitats.

The camp has 4 tents and sleeps a maximum of 8 people, ensuring you always receive a personalised safari experience. The comfortable walk-in safari tents, each have an en-suite bathroom, wooden framed beds with white cotton bed linen, canvas safari seats and solar lighting. There is a small seating area and storage for all your belongings as well, and each tent has either a double bed or twin bed depending on guest numbers.

The en-suite bathroom has a hot bucket shower with plenty of water, mixed to the temperature you prefer by the attentive staff. Being so deep inside the National Park means the camp is not connected to mains electricity, and therefore relies on solar powered lamps - there is also a small solar charging unit for camera batteries so you don't have to worry about not being able to take any photos during your stay here!

The camp is seasonal, and is only open from 1st June until 31st October each year.

Important Travel Information For Zambia

Passport, Visa, and Medical Information

Passport, Visa and Entry Requirements

Certain nationalities require a visa to enter Zambia - these include nationalities from the UK, USA, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand. If you are a passport holder from another country, please contact your local Zambia High Commission or Embassy for up-to-date visa requirements or check this website: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_policy_of_Zambia

The visa can issued at any Zambia Embassy or on arrival at an entry point, or you can now obtain an e-Visa prior to travel via https://evisa.zambiaimmigration.gov.zm/#/.  Single and double entry visit visas are available at all ports of entry, but multi-entry visas are not. If you plan to get a visa on arrival, make sure you have the correct amount of cash (US dollars) with you as change may not be available.

Current visa costs (subject to change) are as follows: Single Entry Visa USD 50 per person; Double/Multipe Entry Visa USD 80 per person; Day Tripper Visa USD 20 per person (enter and exit through same port); Transit Visa USD 50 per person.

If you enter through Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka or the Harry Mwanga International Airport in Livingstone, you can now make payment for single and double entry visas via credit card at the Zambian Immigration desks.

For visitors wanting to travel across to Zimbabwe, the KAZA UniVisa is also an option (although unfortunately this is not always available). This visa allows tourists of certain nationalities to travel freely between Zambia and Zimbabwe, within a 30 day period from the date of their first entry. This same visa will also allow those who cross into Botswana for a day trip to come back into Zambia (or Zimbabwe) without paying any extra visa fees - please note however it is not valid if staying in Botswana overnight. The UniVisa can ONLY be obtained at SELECTED border posts (currently Harry Mwaanga/Livingstone Airport, Victoria Falls Land Border, Kazungula Land Border (border with Botswana) and Kenneth Kaunda/Lusaka Airport) - the current price is USD 50 per person (subject to change) and payable in cash. To check whether you are eligible for this visa, please visit http://www.kazavisa.info/index.php/about/zambia-zimbabwe-visa-info.

For everyone entering Zambia, your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry and have at least 2 blank pages for entry/exit stamps.

PLEASE NOTE: Countries can change their entry requirements at any time. Travel Butlers try to ensure that the information displayed here is correct, but the onus remains with the traveller to verify the information with the relevant High Commission or Embassy and ensure that they can comply with current passport and visa requirements.

Medical

You are advised to contact your doctor or clinic around 4-8 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations and to get their professional medical advice regarding travel to Zambia.

To help prevent diarrhoea, avoid tap water – drink only bottled water and use bottled water for tooth brushing, and avoid ice made with tap water – and only eat fruit or vegetables that are cooked or can be peeled. To help avoid heatstroke, drink plenty of bottled water/fluids, and keep out of the midday sun.

There is no risk of yellow fever in Zambia, so a yellow fever vaccination is NOT required for travellers whose sole destination is Zambia. However, in accordance with International Health Regulations, Zambia requires all travellers over one year of age arriving from a yellow fever risk country, or having been in transit longer than 12 hours at the airport of such a country, to have a yellow fever certificate. These countries include Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda.

There is a risk of malaria in all areas of Zambia - check with your doctor about suitable antimalarial tablets. Dengue fever can also be transmitted via mosquito bites. Try to avoid mosquito bites wherever possible - wear loose long-sleeved clothing and trousers, and use a repellent on clothing and exposed skin.

Tsetse flies are found throughout some of Zambia's National Parks, especially in the Luangwa Valley and Kafue National Park. There have been some cases of sleeping sickness occurring after a tsetse fly bite, although these are mainly amongst farmers and other locals who have repeated exposure to bites. However, the fly can still deliver a painful bite, so it is advisable to take necessary precautions - don't wear dark colours, especially black and blue (including denim), wear long-sleeved clothing and trousers, and don't walk through bushes during the hottest part of the day.
