Cottar's 1920s Safari Camp

Masai Mara: 3 Nights

Cottar's 1920s Safari Camp is situated in the south-eastern corner of the Masai Mara, bordering the Serengeti and Loliondo reserves in an untouched 250,000 acre exclusive concession, providing the discerning client a guarantee of privacy and an abundance of wildlife.  Extending an era of luxury and quality, the camp offers a return to the original spirit and essence of a 'safari', reminiscent of a golden era - an era of romance, professional guiding, adventure and elegance.

Guest activities include game drives guided by professional guides in open 4x4 Land Rovers, both on the concession and into the Masai Mara Reserve itself.  As the concession is outside the main Masai Mara Reserve, guided walks and night drives are allowed on the concession and are highly recommended. By walking, guests can get that much closer to nature, and if an opportunity to track wild game presents itself, the trained trackers will take guests even closer still.

The camp has two main mess tent areas for fine dining, drinking, reading and relaxing, and an amazing pool where guests can relax after a game drive.

There is a masseuse based full-time at the camp for complimentary massages, manicures and pedicures.

The camp has 9 authentic white canvas tents, which are spacious and luxuriously furnished and incorporate original safari antiques. The tents consist of a private en-suite dressing room and bathroom (with a shower and flushing toilet), a main bedroom area and an outdoor veranda.

Each luxury tent has a private butler, all of whom have been trained to provide guests with discreet, yet attentive service.  The 4 family tents have 2 bedrooms and a living room with a fireplace.

For guests wanting absolute privacy Cottar’s Bush Villa can be rented on an exclusive basis and comes with a dedicated team of 8 staff, private vehicle and award winning guides. The contemporary African style villa has a large living room, a dining room, private swimming pool, a magnificent viewing deck and 5 en suite bedrooms all with stunning views.

Important Travel Information For Kenya

Passport, Visa and Entry Requirements

A visa is required for entry into Kenya when travelling as a tourist. Whilst tourists to Kenya can still obtain a visa upon arrival at the port of entry, it is now also possible to apply online for your visa via the eVisa portal https://www.ecitizen.go.ke/.  If you apply online, please ensure that you apply at least 3-4 weeks prior to your travel dates as approval for the eVisa takes up to 7 working days to process. Once the eVisa is issued, it is valid for 3 months. You must print a copy of your visa to present to the Immigration Officer at your point of entry into Kenya. A full list of the nationalities who can be issued with an eVisa can be found here: http://evisa.go.ke/evisa-faqs.html

The following eVisa types are available (please note that visa fees for children under the age of 16 has been removed):

Single Entry - Allows you to enter into Kenya once - current cost USD 51.

Transit - Allows a short stop over (up to 3 days/72 hours) in Kenya - current cost USD 21. This is ideal if you want to leave the secure area of the airport, for example for an overnight stay inbetween flights, or for a period not exceeding 72 hours. No visa is required for a direct transit (not leaving the secure area of the airport, aka staying ‘airside’, within the airport terminal) between 2 flights.

It is also possible to get an East Africa Tourist Visa which is valid for 90 days and allows holders to travel to and within Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda - current cost USD 100 per person - but you can only apply for this at the point of entry or via your local Embassy.

Your passport should also be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Kenya.

Please note that plastic bags are banned in Kenya. Arriving visitors are requested to avoid bring plastic bags into the country and being in possession of a plastic bag is an offence and offenders could be penalised. Visitors are advised to avoid packing any plastic bags in their suitcases or in carry-on hand luggage before flying to Kenya. Items purchased at the airport before boarding the aircraft should be removed from plastic bags. Travellers coming into Kenya with plastic duty-free shop bags will also be required to leave them at the airport. Please check hand luggage before disembarking and any plastic bags (including the transparent ziplock plastic bags that some airlines require passengers to use for keeping liquids, cosmetics, toiletries etc) should be left in the plane. This does not apply to people in transit.

PLEASE NOTE: Countries can change their entry requirements at any time. Travel Butlers try to ensure that the information displayed here is correct, but the onus remains with the traveller to verify the information with the relevant High Commission or Embassy and ensure that they can comply with current passport and visa requirements.

Medical

You are advised to contact your doctor or clinic around 4-8 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations and to get their professional medical advice regarding travel to Kenya.

There is a risk of malaria in all areas of Kenya, except Nairobi and the highlands - check with your doctor about suitable antimalarial tablets. Dengue fever can also be transmitted via mosquito bites. Try to avoid mosquito bites wherever possible - wear loose long-sleeved clothing and trousers, and use a repellent on clothing and exposed skin.

Kenya falls into the yellow fever region in Africa. There is only a low potential for exposure to yellow fever in Nairobi, Mombasa, Lamu, Malindi and Shimba Hills National Park, but in the rest of the country there is a higher risk. It is therefore advisable for all travellers aged 9 months and older to obtain a yellow fever vaccination no less than 10 days prior to travel, but depending on the rest of your travel plans and country of origin, it is not compulsory:

Travellers from the UK who are only travelling directly to and from Kenya are not required to produce a vaccination certificate upon their return to the UK.

If you are arriving into Kenya from a country which has a risk of yellow fever transmission, you will be required to provide a certificate of your vaccination upon entry into Kenya. These countries include Angola, Argentina, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Peru, Rwanda, Uganda and Venezula but it is up to the traveller to check the full list via http://www.who.int/ith/2015-ith-annex1.pdf?ua=1

Certain countries including South Africa and Tanzania will deny entry if you are arriving from Kenya without the vaccination. Please ensure you check the full list via http://www.who.int/ith/2015-ith-annex1.pdf?ua=1 to see which countries impose this rule.

If your doctor advises that it is not safe for you to have the vaccination then you should obtain a medical waiver and travel with this instead.

Important Travel Information For Tanzania

Passport, Visa and Entry Requirements

Holders of the following passports require a visa to enter Tanzania when travelling as a tourist: United Kingdom; United States of America; Canada; Australia; New Zealand; Belgium; Netherlands; Italy; France; Germany; Spain; Ireland. If you are a passport holder from another country, please contact your local Tanzania High Commission or Embassy for up-to-date visa requirements.

Visas are issued at any Tanzania Embassy, online via the Tanzania Immigration website https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa/ or on arrival - please note that getting a visa on arrival can take a substantial amount of time and if possible, we would advise getting your visa online prior to travel. Single entry visas obtained at port of entry currently cost USD 50 per person (but USD 100 per person for US Nationals) - costs all subject to change - and the cost is payable in USD cash only. We recommend small denominations of dollars as officials are not in the position to give change. Please note that if you are applying online, you need to allow 2-3 weeks to receive your visa, and Embassy applications can take longer. American nationals applying online MUST select Multiple Entry Visa type. Online or Embassy visa applications for minors under 18 years travelling alone or with only one parent/legal guardian must also be accompanied by a consent letter, jointly signed by both parents or legal guardians approving the travel. NOTE: Zanzibar Airport is referred to as Abeid Amani Karume International Airport on the online visa application. Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Tanzania and have sufficient blank pages for entry/exit stamps (AT LEAST 4 consecutive pages).

Please note that plastic bags are banned in Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania. Arriving visitors are requested to avoid bring plastic bags into the country - this includes in suitcases and carry-on hand luggage. Please check hand luggage before disembarking and any plastic bags (including plastic duty-free shopping bags and the transparent plastic bags that some airlines require passengers to use for keeping liquids, cosmetics, etc) should be left in the plane. Ziploc bags that are specifically used to carry toiletries will be permitted as they are expected to remain in the permanent possession of visitors and are not expected to be disposed in the country.

PLEASE NOTE: Countries can change their entry requirements at any time. Travel Butlers try to ensure that the information displayed here is correct, but the onus remains with the traveller to verify the information with the relevant High Commission or Embassy and ensure that they can comply with current passport and visa requirements.

Medical

You are advised to contact your doctor or clinic around 4-8 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations and to get their professional medical advice regarding travel to Tanzania.

To help prevent diarrhoea, avoid tap water – drink only bottled water and use bottled water for tooth brushing, and avoid ice made with tap water – and only eat fruit or vegetables that are cooked or can be peeled. To help avoid heatstroke, drink plenty of bottled water/fluids, and keep out of the midday sun.

There is a risk of malaria in all areas of Tanzania and Zanzibar - check with your doctor about suitable antimalarial tablets. Dengue fever can also be transmitted via mosquito bites. Try to avoid mosquito bites wherever possible - wear loose long-sleeved clothing and trousers, and use a repellent on clothing and exposed skin.

Tsetse flies are found throughout most of Tanzania's Northern and Southern Parks, especially in wooded areas. There have been some cases of sleeping sickness occurring after a tsetse fly bite, although these are mainly amongst farmers/locals who have repeated exposure to bites. However, the fly can still deliver a painful bite, so it is advisable to take necessary precautions - don't wear dark colours, especially black and blue (including denim), wear long-sleeved clothing/trousers, and don't walk through bushes during the hottest part of the day.

Tanzania is not listed as a yellow fever endemic country, however, in accordance with International Health Regulations, Tanzania requires all travellers over one year of age to present a yellow fever vaccination certificate on arrival if (a) they are arriving from a yellow fever risk country; (b) they have been in transit longer than 12 hours at the airport of a yellow fever risk country; (c) they have left the airport whilst on transit in a yellow fever risk country. These countries include Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda.

PLEASE NOTE: Although Tanzania is not listed as a Yellow Fever endemic country, Zanzibar immigration officials MAY ask to see Yellow Fever vaccination certificates or exemption certificates upon arrival from the Tanzania mainland. We would therefore suggest that if your holiday includes both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, each traveller considers getting/travelling with a Yellow Fever certificate to avoid any complications upon arrival at Zanzibar.
