Camp Savuti

Chobe National Park: 2 Nights

Camp Savuti is located in the heart of the Chobe National Park, on the Savuti Channel. The emphasis of this camp is its natural appeal, and eco-friendly ethos, while maintaining a serene level of luxury. This traditional, understated camp is beautifully decorated with African-inspired woodwork, cattle skin rugs, and arts and crafts that give the camp an authentic feel.

The Savuti Marsh, fed by the Savuti Channel, has developed a reputation over the years as one of the world’s premier predator viewing areas, boasting one of the highest concentrations of wildlife on the African continent. A number of award-winning documentary films shot in Savuti have cemented its reputation.

The Channel, dry since 1982, started flowing again in 2010 and is now once again flooding the Marsh, an area of sweet grasses that attracts herbivores of every description and, this being Africa, their attendant predators.

The activities on offer are morning and afternoon game drives through the Park and along the fringes of the channel and marsh. The game-viewing vehicles are open to facilitate game-watching and photography, and your guide will delight in showing you the beauty and diversity of Savuti’s natural wonders.

Camp Savuti is a small, intimate camp of 5 en-suite Meru-style tents accommodating a maximum of 10 guests in comfort and style. The tents have been positioned to ensure privacy and peace for guests when in their rooms. Each tent sits on a raised wooden deckand has a private veranda facing the landscape beyond.

Other facilities at Camp Savuti include the dining and bar area, as well as small deck located next to the channel, a perfect venue to unwind. There is a library, which guests can make use of if they like. The bar and boma facilities are available for convivial drinks around a fire.

The camp offers only walking and mokoro activities - the mokoro being the traditional dug-out canoe of the swamps. Your private guide (maximum of 2 guests per guide) was born and raised in the area. He owns his mokoro (the genuine wooden article) and will take you out in it in the early mornings and afternoons, to nearby islands where he will walk with you to view game and the spectacular landscape that is the Okavango. On request, the camp will pack a picnic lunch for you, allowing you to stay out the whole day.

Deception Valley Lodge

Central Kalahari: 2 Nights

Set on a 15,000 hectare private reserve, bordering the northern boundary of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Deception Valley Lodge is the premier Kalahari destination in Botswana. With its own airstrip a short 15 minute drive from the lodge, Deception Valley Lodge is a mere 30 minutes by air from Maun.

Activities are varied. The reserve's extensive network of tracks make for perfect day and night driving terrain. The Kalahari sand offers excellent opportunities for tracking lion and leopard and where your guide can follow off road as this is a private game reserve.

A visit to Deception Valley Lodge would not be complete without experiencing a walk with the San (Bushmen). Walk through a terrain that appears to the uninitiated to offer little in the way of sustenance, but is a treasure-trove of fruits, berries, tubers, barks, herbs and flowers used in cooking, medicine, ceremonies and for a plethora of other purposes. Learn about their hunting and survival skills, and the culture and crafts of the San people, All this before looking at the mammals, birds, reptiles and insects that form part of this fascinating desert world.

The lodge offers all the facilities that ensure a comfortable and relaxing stay. With a stunning location overlooking the waterhole, each of the 8 spacious suites has a bedroom, separate lounge area, and an en-suite bathroom with Victorian bath and outdoor shower.

The main lodge boasts a swimming pool, several indoor and outdoor areas in which to relax and dine and, in a nod to the remoteness of the location, wireless internet delivered by satellite.

Important Travel Information For Botswana

Passport, Visa and Entry Requirements

Holders of the following passports do not require a visa to enter Botswana when travelling as a tourist for stays up to 90 days: United Kingdom; United States of America; Canada; Australia; New Zealand; Ireland; Belgium; Netherlands; Italy; France; Germany; Spain; South Africa. If you are a passport holder from another country, please contact your local Botswana High Commission or Embassy for up-to-date visa requirements, as citizens of certain countries are required to obtain visas before travelling. Please note that if you are applying to the Embassy for your visa, some visas can take a long time to be processed so please do take this into consideration, as it is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct visa in place before you travel.

Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Botswana and have sufficient blank pages for the Botswana entry/exit stamps (at least 2).

TRAVELLING TO/FROM BOTSWANA WITH CHILDREN YOUNGER THAN 18 YEARS OF AGE AT DATE OF TRAVEL: The following requirements apply regardless of nationality. Parents travelling with children must produce an unabridged birth certificate for the child, showing full details of the child's parents. If the birth certificate is in a language other than English, it must be accompanied by a sworn translation issued by a competent authority in the country concerned. If the child is adopted, the adoption certificate must be produced. If only one parent is travelling, said parent must also show consent in the form of an affidavit from the other parent named on the birth certificate authorising the child to travel (the affidavit must be no more than 6 months old from the date of travel), or a court order granting full parental responsibilities to the travelling parent, or (where applicable) a death certificate for the deceased parent. Legally separated parents should also provide a court order when the other parent does not give consent. Where a person is travelling with a child who is not their biological child, he/she must produce an unabridged birth certificate for the child supplemented by affidavits from the child's parents/legal guardian giving consent for the child to travel and copies of the identity documents or passport of the parents/legal guardian PLUS their contact details. There are also additional rules for unaccompanied minors - available on request. PLEASE NOTE: All documents must be original - PHOTOCOPIES ARE NOT ACCEPTED. In the case of foreign countries that do not issue unabridged birth certificates, a letter to this effect issued by the competent authority of the foreign country should be produced. For more information, please contact your Botswana High Commission.

Please note that plastic bags are banned in Botswana. This ban is primarily aimed to reduce plastic in commercial use (as opposed to tourists bringing in plastic bags to carry personal property), however, we would strongly recommend guests avoid bringing plastic bags into the country if possible.

PLEASE NOTE: Countries can change their entry requirements at any time. Travel Butlers try to ensure that the information displayed here is correct, but the onus remains with the traveller to verify the information with the relevant High Commission or Embassy and ensure that they can comply with current passport and visa requirements.

Medical

You are advised to contact your doctor or clinic around 4-8 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations and to get their professional medical advice regarding travel to Botswana.

To help prevent diarrhoea, avoid tap water – drink only bottled water and use bottled water for tooth brushing, and avoid ice made with tap water – and only eat fruit or vegetables that are cooked or can be peeled. To help avoid heatstroke, drink plenty of bottled water/fluids, and keep out of the midday sun.

There is a risk of malaria in the northern half of Botswana, including Chobe and the Okavango Delta, particularly during the months of November to June - check with your doctor about suitable antimalarial tablets. Try to avoid mosquito bites wherever possible - wear loose long-sleeved clothing and trousers, and use a repellent on clothing and exposed skin.

There is no risk of yellow fever in Botswana, so a yellow fever vaccination is NOT required for travellers whose sole destination is Botswana. However, in accordance with International Health Regulations, Botswana requires all travellers over one year of age arriving from a yellow fever risk country, or having been in transit longer than 12 hours at the airport of such a country, to have a yellow fever certificate. These countries include Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda.
