Eka Hotel

Nairobi

Day 1: Nairobi

Eka Hotel Location Map

Nairobi is the capital of Kenya, and is the country's largest city, and is the arrival point for many visitors into the country. The main airport is Jomo Kenyatta International, located 15 km out of the centre of town, but many itineraries will also include flights into and out of Wilson Airport, located 11 km outside of the city centre, as this is the domestic hub for both scheduled and chartered domestic air traffic.

The capital city is not wholly separated from the great African wilderness that most people come to Kenya to enjoy. Just outside the city is the Nairobi National Park, 113 square km of plains, cliffs and forest. The Park is home to large herds of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe, rhino, cheetah and a large number of lions - all living wild within 20 minutes of the busy city.

Other wildlife attractions of the city include the Elephant Orphanage, where visitors have the unique opportunity to experience the feeding of baby orphaned elephants and rhinos up close, or the Giraffe Centre where visitors can feed the resident giraffes.

You can also visit the Karen Blixen Museum, Karen Blixen's former home and which was donated by the Danish government to Kenya. Karen Blixen, also known by her pseudonym Isak Dinesen, is famous for her memoir, Out of Africa. The trained and knowledgeable guides at the museum are on hand to answer any questions on the history of the museum and on Karen Blixen's life.

Eka Hotel is conveniently located along the Mombasa Road in Nairobi, and offers easy access to both Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Wilson Airport, and also the Nairobi National Park.

The hotel has 167 air-conditioned rooms and suites. Guests staying in the hotel have exclusive access to the gym and swimming pool, and there is also a wellness center which offers a range of treatments.

There are two restaurants, two bars and a 24 hour coffee shop. Each dining experience provides guests with a taste of a broad selection of international and local cuisine.

Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge Location Map

Set against the magnificent backdrop of Africa's highest mountain, the glittering Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge enjoys a uniquely privileged position at the heart of this world-famous National Park.

Secluded within a grove of acacia trees, the lodge looks out over the golden savannah plains, with uninterrupted views of the mountain itself. Close by are a series of emerald green swamps, which are fed by the melting snows of Kilimanjaro. These, the only sources of water in this otherwise starkly beautiful but arid Park, attract huge numbers of wallowing elephants, hippos, buffalos and plains game. Meanwhile, from the prehistoric site of Observation Hill, the sunset over Kilimanjaro is magnificent.

The decor reflects the brilliant primary colours and iconic shapes representative of the legendary Masai warriors.

The dining area is reached by a timbered bridge over a melt-water stream, while the lounge and bar feature a broad terrace and a blazing fire-pit where evening cocktails can be enjoyed.

Activities include daily game drives in custom-built traditional safari vehicles, sundowners on Observation Hill, bush breakfasts, bush dinners, Masai dance performances, visits to Masai villages and tree-planting programmes. The swimming pool and sundeck offer a relaxing venue for a spot of sunbathing in between activities.

Each of the 92 rooms open directly onto the grounds.

Each tastefully-appointed room features a Masai-inspired, hand-painted, wall fresco, a kingsized bed or luxurious twin beds, lavish all-encompassing mosquito-curtaining, bathroom (with walk-in shower), a writing/vanity unit, and a private veranda. All rooms have a ceiling fan.

Host to all the members of the 'Big Five' (elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo and leopard), the conservancy also boasts the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, hosts the only chimpanzee sanctuary in Kenya, and shelters large numbers of rare and endangered species.

In the event that the collared lions are inaccessible, other lion sightings are reported and the same identifying features such as whisker spots, ear tears and nose spotting recorded. It is a great way to learn about lions and all of the information gathered is passed on to the Ol Pejeta Ecological Monitoring Department.

Tucked inside the landscaped grounds and accessible via winding stone pathways, Sweetwaters Serena Camp’s accommodation includes 56 stylishly appointed tents spread across the Standard Wing and the deluxe Morani Wing.
