Summary Of The Itinerary

Printable Version

Holiday Title: Wild Kingdoms Safari

Passengers: 2 Adults

Day 1

Arrive into Johannesburg OR Tambo Airport. Go through Immigration, collect your luggage and clear Customs, then make your way into the Arrivals Hall, where you'll be met by your representative and transferred to your hotel. Johannesburg is the largest and most populous city in South Africa, and is also the source of a large-scale gold and diamond trade, due to its location on the mineral-rich Witwatersrand range of hills.

The Protea Hotel Wanderers is a stylish hotel in the heart of Johannesburg's popular suburb of Illovo. Ideally located, it offers easy access to a number of excellent shopping and dining alternatives. Warm earthy tones, elegant decor and harmonious designs compliment the exceptional and intuitive service of this elegant city hotel.

[OPTIONAL ACTIVITY AND ADDITIONAL COST] Enjoy an afternoon tour of Soweto. Soweto is unlike any suburb you've ever seen or been to, yet the history of struggle encapsulated here is a cornerstone of the South African history.

At 19:00 you will meet up at reception for a briefing on the tour and a chance to meet your fellow travellers.

Day 2

After breakfast you will depart Johannesburg and head for Pretoria, South Africa's capital city, for a short orientation tour, before continuing to the Mpumalanga Province, known as Paradise Country. Dropping several hundred feet into the lush subtropical region of the Lowveld, you will travel via the historic towns of Dullstroom and Lydenburg. After traversing the famous Long Tom Pass, travelling via Sabie, you will arrive late afternoon in Hazyview at your overnight accommodation.

Located in Hazyview, just a short drive away from the Kruger National Park, Perry's Bridge Hollow is situated around the Perry's Bridge Trading Post with its restaurants, bar, adventure centre and working brewery. The rooms, with their colonial decor, are spacious and comfortable. Guests do not have to go far for exceptionally good food as the on-site Kuka Restaurant and Cocktail Bar is specialised in sumptuous Afro-chic meals.

Day 3

After an early morning breakfast, you will drive along the spectacular Panorama Route, offering views of amazing scenery including the 26 km-long Blyde River Canyon (home to the Three Rondavels), Bourke's Luck Potholes and historic God's Window, a breathtaking view (weather permitting) of the edge of the escarpment taking in the Kruger National Park. You will arrive back in Hazyview in the early afternoon.

[OPTIONAL ACTIVITY AND ADDITIONAL COST] This evening, you will be transferred to the nearby Shangaan Cultural Village, where you will enjoy a flame-lit evening festival which tells the story of the Shangaan nation with a cast of choristers, actors and dancers. Colourful and fast-moving, this is a fabulous experience, and a traditional feast is served.

Day 4

The day begins with an early morning coffee or tea, followed by a thrilling open-vehicle safari (with English speaking game ranger) through Kruger National Park with a pre-packed breakfast. Kruger is one of the world's greatest national parks, home to a stunning array of wildlife including the Big 5 (rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, and elephant) as well as prolific birdlife and numerous other game. You will arrive back at the hotel in the afternoon.

[OPTIONAL ACTIVITY AND ADDITIONAL COST] For wildlife enthusiasts, enjoy a second game drive in the afternoon, in one of the worlds most renowned game reserves.

Day 5

This morning you will travel to Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland), an independent Kingdom within the borders of South Africa, known for its lovely scenery, crafts and colourful indigenous culture. You will travel via the capital city, Mbabane, and onto the beautiful Ezulwini Valley. Lunch is included today.

The Royal Villas are set in a beautiful secure estate with stunning views of the Royal Mdzimba Mountains, just 10 minutes from the capital Mbabane.

Day 6

After breakfast you will continue south through Eswatini, before re-entering South Africa. Travel into Zululand, passing traditional round huts and endless vistas, before reaching your overnight accommodation in the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi region.

Rich in natural ambiance and with a distinctively African rhythm, Anew Hotel Hluhluwe invites guests to relish the untamed beauty of KwaZulu-Natal and rich cultural heritage of the Zulu people. Comfortable accommodation is in en-suite rooms with all modern amenities. Enjoy refreshing sundowners on the swimming pool terrace while a Zulu dance show is held under a magnificent Fever tree.

[OPTIONAL ACTIVITY AND ADDITIONAL COST] Enjoy an afternoon game drive in the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, which contains an immense diversity of fauna and flora and is particularly famous for its conservation of black and white rhino. The Park is the oldest game reserve in Africa.

Day 7

This morning you will join a cruise on Lake St Lucia (depending on favourable weather conditions) before departing for Durban, taking you past traditional Zulu kraals, Eucalyptus plantations and sugar cane fields. You will arrive in Durban in the early afternoon where the tour ends on arrival.

Protea Hotel Wanderers

Johannesburg: 1 Night

Despite its colourful reputation, Johannesburg has a wealth of attractions, and the vast majority of overseas visitors leave pleasantly surprised, especially if it is their first time to the city and they have had the time to explore it for a couple of days. Taking a guided tour of Johannesburg's highlights, which include The Museum Africa, the Johannesburg Art Gallery, and the thought-provoking and excellent Apartheid Museum to name but a few, is an excellent way to see the major attractions of the city, and spending a day in the company of a recommended tour guide will also give a new perspective to the city which visitors otherwise would not be aware of.

Other sightseeing attractions include the Carlton Centre (or Top of Africa as it is more commonly known), which is the tallest building in the entire Southern Hemisphere, the Mai Mai Centre (Johannesburg's traditional medicine market) and the World of Beer. A tour of nearby Soweto will give an interesting insight into the country's largest town, home to over 3 million people. One of the highlights of a trip to Soweto is a visit to Nelson Mandela's former house, where he used to lived before his prison sentence. For the adreneline seekers, Gold Reef City is a must. There are around 30 rides in the Park, including some truly terrifying white-knuckle rides.

Protea Hotel Wanderers is a stylish hotel in the heart of Johannesburg’s popular suburb of Illovo. Ideally located, it offers easy access to a number of excellent shopping and dining alternatives. It consists of 229 modern, air-conditioned rooms with sound-proofed windows, satellite TV, free Wi-Fi and en-suite bathrooms. Warm earthy tones, elegant decor and harmonious designs compliment the exceptional and intuitive service of this elegant city hotel.

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park: 1 Night

You don't have to visit Kruger to experience wildlife, or see the Big 5 close to. Only 280 km north of Durban, the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park covers 96,000 hectares and is renowned for its variety of bird and animal life.

There have been over 300 bird species recorded, and cheetah, wild dog, the Big 5 and many species of antelope and other plains game including giraffe and zebra inhabit the Park, offering the visitor a varied self-drive game viewing experience.

The Park is most famous for its population of white rhino, of which there are about 1,600, and it is practically impossible to visit the Park without seeing one - if this happens, then you are extremely unlucky!

The excellent road infrastructure means that self-driving is easy in a 2WD, or you can arrange to go on a guided game drive from the camps.  Viewing hides overlook waterholes enabling visitors to see animals at close range.

Situated between the renowned Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park and the Isimangaliso (Greater St Lucia) Wetland Park is the Anew Hotel Hluhluwe & Safaris. Important Travel Information For South Africa

Passport, Visa and Entry Requirements

Latest Travel Updates

For up-to-date travel information from the UK government, please check:

UK Government Advice: www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/south-africa

Normally, holders of the following passports do not require a visa to enter South Africa when travelling as a tourist for stays up to 90 days: United Kingdom; United States of America; Canada; Australia; Ireland; Belgium; Netherlands; Italy; France; Germany; Spain, Switzerland.

If you are a passport holder from another country, please contact your local South Africa High Commission or Embassy for up-to-date visa requirements, as citizens of certain countries (including New Zealand) are required to obtain visas before travelling. Please note that if you are applying to the Embassy for your visa, some visas can take a long time to be processed so please do take this into consideration, as it is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct visa in place before you travel.

Children under 18 years of age who require a visa to enter South Africa may be required to provide additional information when applying for the visa including an unabridged birth certificate and affidavit if travelling with only one parent.  There are also additional rules for unaccompanied minors and/or South African children - details available on request or via the SA Department of Home Affairs at http://www.dha.gov.za.

Please note that anyone travelling to South Africa should have a valid return ticket and a valid passport. Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 30 days from the date of exit from South Africa. However, some immigration officials still request that a passport should have at least 6 months validity from the date of entry to South Africa so to avoid problems on arrival, we advise that your passport meets this requirement instead. The passport must also have sufficient pages for entry/exit stamps - AT LEAST 2 BLANK PAGES.

South Africa has implemented biometric capturing at all ports of entry. This may result in some delays at land borders so you should allow additional time for border crossings.

PLEASE NOTE: Countries can change their entry requirements at any time. Travel Butlers try to ensure that the information displayed here is correct, but the onus remains with the traveller to verify the information with the relevant High Commission or Embassy and ensure that they can comply with the applicable entry requirements.

Medical

You are advised to contact your doctor or clinic around 4-8 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations and to get their professional medical advice regarding travel to South Africa.

To help avoid heatstroke, drink plenty of bottled water/fluids, and keep out of the midday sun.

Tap water is purified and safe to drink in major cities and towns, however, we do advise that you do not drink the water in more remote places such as the camps in the National Parks - the water may be safe to drink, but it simply is not worth the risk, as bottled water is widely available.

Whatever you do, do not drink water from any river lake without firstly purifying the water. Always take water with you when you go on a hike, and have a bottle in the car on a long journey to avoid dehydration.

There is a risk of malaria in and around the Kruger National Park/Mpumalanga Province, the Limpopo (Northern) Province, and the north-eastern part of KwaZulu-Natal - check with your doctor about suitable antimalarial tablets. Try to avoid mosquito bites wherever possible - wear loose long-sleeved clothing and trousers, and use a repellent on clothing and exposed skin.

There is no risk of yellow fever in South Africa, so a yellow fever vaccination is NOT required for travellers whose sole destination is South Africa. However, in accordance with International Health Reguations, South Africa requires all travellers over one year of age arriving from a yellow fever risk country, or having been in transit longer than 12 hours at the airport of such a country, to have a yellow fever certificate. These countries include Kenya and Uganda but it is up to the traveller to check the full list here https://nathnacyfzone.org.uk/factsheet/60/yellow-fever-maps

If you need emergency medical assistance during your trip, dial 10177 and ask for an ambulance.

Important Travel Information For South Africa

Continued

Languages And Culture

The 11 official languages are Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans, Pedi, English, Tswana, Sotho, Tsonga, Swati, Venda and Ndebele. Whilst many visitors will hear at least a couple of the tribal languages during the course of their stay, it is possible to travel extensively and comfortably with just English as a language.

The South African society is quite liberal, as gay marriage was legalised in 2006 nationwide and everyone’s rights are protected under the constitution. In some more rural areas, however, the local people may not be quite as liberal thinking, so whilst everyone is of course entitled to their own sexual preferences and gender identity, we would advise all clients of the LGBT+ community to refrain from public displays of affection (including kissing and holding hands) and to be as discrete as possible about their relationship if travelling to a rural/remote area.

Important Travel Information For Eswatini

Passport, Visa and Entry Requirements

Latest Travel Updates

For up-to-date travel information from the UK government, please check:

UK Government Advice: www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/eswatini

Normally, holders of the following passports do not require a visa to enter Eswatini when travelling as a tourist for a stay of up to 30 days:

United Kingdom; United States of America; Canada; Australia; New Zealand; Ireland; Belgium; Netherlands; Italy; France; Germany; Spain; South Africa.

If you are a passport holder from another country, please contact your local Eswatini High Commission or Embassy for up-to-date visa requirements, as citizens of certain countries are required to obtain visas before travelling. Please note that if you are applying to the Embassy for your visa, some visas can take a long time to be processed so please do take this into consideration, as it is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct visa in place before you travel.

If you are travelling by road, you can enter Eswatini through any of 13 border posts, with all 4 corners of the country accessible by tarred road. Two border posts are with Mozambique, and the other 11 are with South Africa. All are open 7 days a week and operate at varying hours. At the moment, it is necessary to complete formalities on both sides of each border. A road tax of Emalangeni 50 (subject to change) is payable at the borders for non-Eswatini registered vehicles. If you are planning on taking your hire car across from South Africa into Eswatini, do remember to clear this with your hire car company beforehand - many hire car companies will need to issue you with a Letter of Authority to show at the border post.

Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Eswatini and have sufficient blank pages for entry/exit stamps.

PLEASE NOTE: Countries can change their entry requirements at any time. Travel Butlers try to ensure that the information displayed here is correct, but the onus remains with the traveller to verify the information with the relevant High Commission or Embassy and ensure that they can comply with the applicable entry requirements.

Medical

You are advised to contact your doctor or clinic around 4-8 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations and to get their professional medical advice regarding travel to Eswatini.

To help avoid heatstroke, drink plenty of bottled water/fluids, and keep out of the midday sun.

There is a risk of malaria in the eastern areas bordering Mozambique and South Africa, including all of the Lubombo district and the eastern half of Hhohho and Shiselweni districts - check with your doctor about suitable antimalarial tablets. Try to avoid mosquito bites wherever possible - wear loose long-sleeved clothing and trousers, and use a repellent on clothing and exposed skin.

There is no risk of yellow fever in Eswatini, so a yellow fever vaccination is NOT required for travellers whose sole destination is Eswatini. However, in accordance with International Health Regulations, Eswatini requires all travellers over one year of age arriving from a yellow fever risk country, or having been in transit longer than 12 hours at the airport of such a country, to have a yellow fever certificate. These countries include Kenya and Uganda but it is up to the traveller to check the full list here https://nathnacyfzone.org.uk/factsheet/60/yellow-fever-maps

Languages And Culture

The 2 official languages are English and siSwati, which is similar to the Zulu language. Most people in the urban areas are bilingual.

We would ask that all travellers are respectful of the local culture as follows:

Homosexuality is illegal in Eswatini. Whilst everyone is of course entitled to their own sexual preferences and gender identity, we would advise all clients of the LGBT+ community to refrain from public displays of affection (including kissing and holding hands) and to be as discrete as possible about their relationship.

Most people will not mind being photographed but it is common courtesy to ask permission first.

Travel Butlers have 20 years experience of booking travel to Africa and the Indian Ocean for clients from all around the world.  In this time we have supported clients through disruptions caused by numerous unexpected events including natural disasters, localised disease outbreaks and airline cancellations. Nobody can be certain exactly what will happen in the future, however Travel Butlers can offer you peace of mind and flexibility to ensure that you feel confident booking a holiday with us.

Flexibility and peace of mind before you travel

Our team are specialists in travel to Africa and the Indian Ocean, and we are constantly monitoring the changing situation regarding travel to the region. If your trip cannot go ahead due to specific travel restrictions related to Covid-19 then we will get in touch to offer you the choice of the following:

The specific Covid-19 travel restrictions are defined as follows:

We would not normally be able to confirm that your trip cannot proceed due to travel restrictions until a couple of weeks before the start of your trip, however should you want to look at postponing or altering your trip before then we would aim to be as flexible as possible.

If we confirm that your trip is unable to proceed due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, then we will not charge you an amendment fee if you choose to postpone your trip or move it to another destination. We may need to adjust the cost of your trip to reflect the new dates, particularly if those coincide with a more expensive season of travel or higher grade of accommodation. Equally, if the cost of your postponed trip is less, we will reduce the cost accordingly.

You should still take out travel insurance that includes Covid-19  to cover you in the event that your trip can go ahead but you are unable to travel due to illness or a change in your personal circumstances. If there are no travel restrictions in place that mean your trip could not go ahead but you need to cancel due to illness or a change in your personal circumstances then our normal terms and conditions would apply. You should ensure that your travel insurance provides adequate cover for cancelling due to illness, including Covid-19, and you may be able to make a claim against your travel insurance depending on the cover offered by your policy.

We offer 24/7 telephone assistance to all our clients whilst they are away, and also have partners in each country that are able to assist with any PCR tests or other issues that might arise during your trip.

If you fall ill whilst you are away, or if your trip is disrupted due to Covid-19 whilst you are travelling, then our experienced team will be on hand to assist you in whatever way you need.  You would need to pay any additional costs incurred due to illness or travel disruption whilst you are away, however you may be able reclaim these expenses on your travel insurance depending on the cover offered by your policy.  Travel Butlers will be able to assist by providing supporting documentation for your claim.
