Malaria-Free Safaris near Port Elizabeth and The Garden Route
The Shamwari Game Reserve is 25,000 hectres of malaria-free, private game reserve situated in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.
Shamwari is the long
est established of the private reserves near Port Elizabeth. The reserve boasts 5 eco-systems, and supports many forms of plant, animal and bird life, including the Big 5 as well as wild dog, cheetah, hyena, giraffe, hippo, zebra and numerous antelope species.
Guests can enjoy morning and afternoon safari drives in an open game viewing vehicle, accompanied by an experienced ranger, who will tell you all you need to know about the wildlife you encounter as you drive through the bush.
The game drives normally last between 3 and 4 hours each, and include a sundowner stop at sunset and a coffee stop in the morning. Guided walks after breakfast can also be arranged.
Shamwari is in partnership with actress / conservationist Virginia McKenna's Born Free Foundation, and guests staying at Shamwari have the opportunity to visit Shamwari's very own Born Free Foundation Animal Rescue and Education Centre.
The goal of this centre is to create an awareness of the terrible way in which wildlife is exploited in captivity around the world, and over the years the Shamwari Born Free Foundation has been able to rescue several big cats from situations where they are in serious danger and provide them with excellent life time care.
The lodges in the Shamwari portfolio offer accommodation ranging from luxury tents to an Edwardian mansion in the heart of the bush. The lodge also welcomes children at a couple of the lodges.
The combination of luxury safari lodges and the outstanding work that the reserve does with the Born Free Foundation has earned them numerous travel industry and conservation awards over the years.

Sarili Lodge has 5 en-suite rooms in total - 2 luxury rooms with a balcony, 2 that open out onto a patio, and a suite. All the rooms have air-conditioning and a private minibar, as well as tea and coffee making facilities.

Pronounced 'By-ye-ti', the Bayethe Lodge offers the ultimate in luxury, tented accommodation. Each of the 12 twin-bedded air-conditioned suites are camouflaged under trees allowing ample privacy, and have an en-suite bathroom, under-floor heating, outdoor shower, and viewing deck.

All 5 Junior suites at Lobengula Lodge are en-suite, with air-conditioning and under-floor heating, whilst the Chief suite boasts a large private lounge with fireplace and pool. There is also a small gym and steam bath, and the spa offers a wide range of indulgent treatments.

Each of the 9 superior rooms at Eagles Crag have been built to maximize the privacy of the guest. Decorated in light and contemporary colours, with wall-to-wall glass doors on 2 sides, the en-suite rooms all provide stunning views of the surrounding cliffs.
