A good road map is an invaluable travelling companion for self-drive visitors, but sometimes it is difficult to find one for South Africa in Europe or North America (even in South Africa it is not always easy to find the right map).
Generally speaking we would recommend buying a map that concentrates only on the area that you will be driving in, and you do not need to invest in a travel atlas for the whole country if you are only staying in Cape Town.
Our own preferred maps are those published by Globetrotter and Map Studio (Map Studio are not always available through Amazon but can be found direct at: http://www.mapstudio.co.za - although the site oftens seems to be very slow.
