The Garden Route is renowned for being a stunning stretch of coastline, and is proud to boast miles and miles of sandy beaches.
But it is not only sun-worshippers that flock to enjoy the beaches here. For horse lovers, there is nothing quite like an early morning or sunset canter along the shoreline, and for the more adventurous, there are several operators offering a range of adrenalin activites such as shark cage diving, ship wreck diving, and snorkelling.
Wilderness
The magnificent Wilderness beach is possibly one of the most beautiful along the entire Garden Route - a vast expanse of pristine golden beach, from which you can frequently spot dolphins playing in the waves, and even whales during the whale watching season.
Relax in the warm sun, and revel the fact that the beach is never too crowded - even in the height of summer - but please note that the ocean currents here are strong, so care should be taken if you decide to go in for a dip.
Knysna
Located on Leisure Isle, Bollard Bay Beach is ideal for families, and has safe swimming in shallow waters. Buffalos Bay is a fine sandy beach, also offering safe swimming for families, and is ideal for walking and fishing - plus whales and dolphins can be spotted from the shore too.
Brenton-on-Sea
Brenton-on-Sea beach, just outside Knysna, is a magnificent 7 km stretch of uninterrupted white sands around a half heart-shaped bay. Quiet and sparsely populated for most of the year, it is possible to walk for a good couple of hours in one direction and only pass a handful of other people.
In the height of the season, the beach is popular with surfers and sunbathers, although the currents are quite strong so it is not suitable for swimming.
Plettenberg Bay
The beaches at Plettenberg Bay span more than 15 km of the Indian Ocean's shore, and are incredibly popular with tourists and locals alike.
There are 4 main beach areas to choose from. Central Beach is normally the busiest beach in Plett, as not only is it great for sunbathing, but it is also where the whale watching boat cruises depart from, plus it is a popular spot for windsurfers and hobie cat enthusiasists.
Lookout Beach is a favourite with surfers and also offers incredible views of the rugged Outeniqua Mountain range - and is the perfect place to catch a sunset; Robberg Beach is ideal for long walks and is a real winner when it comes to spotting whales from the shoreline; and the unspoilt Keurbooms Beach is a little wilder, but equally beautiful.
Natures Valley
Arguably one of the most beautiful parts of the Garden Route, Nature's Valley lies nestled in the Tsitsikamma National Park at the mouth of the Groot River, where an attractive dark water lagoon spills out to the sea over a wide, sandy beach.
Visitors to the area can also enjoy the spectacular winding road pass that winds its way down the sides of the river’s mighty gorge and back up again. The 5 km stretch of beach is perfect for swimming, walking or snorkelling, or just simply relaxing and getting close to nature.
Herold's Bay
A natural beauty spot, Herold's Bay is situated between Mossel Bay and George.
Offering very safe, protected sea bathing and a tidal pool, Herold’s Bay is not only popular for its open beaches and interesting rock pools but is well-known for its fishing spots. There are also coastal walks and trails ideal for spotting dolphins and whales. The unspoilt coastal fynbos makes it a popular spot for birders and nature-lovers.
