Kulala Wilderness Camp

Sossusvlei, Sossusvlei and the Namib Desert

Kulala Wilderness Camp

Average guest rating:4.0

Kulala Wilderness Camp is located in the heart of Namibia's Namib Desert, and situated on a 46,000 hectare private reserve near Sossusvlei with its own entrance into the Namib-Naukluft Park. On the edge of the oldest desert in the world, wildlife here is sparse but fascinating. Sightings of animals such as springbok, gemsbok, ostrich, bat-eared Fox and aardwolf are exciting in these rugged conditions.

Built at the foot of a mountain, the camp has a relaxed main lounge and fully stocked bar area, a swimming pool and a small curio shop. A 3 course dinner is served in the dining area at a large 'family' style table where guests can chat together about their day's activities.

Guests can choose whether they want just dinner, bed and breakfast, or a fully inclusive package.

The early morning guided game drives to the spectacular dunes for sunrise are one of the highlights of staying at the camp. Guests can also participate in guided walks on the private reserve, both at night and during the day, to enjoy the Namib scenery and the desert-adapted wildlife and flora.

Or for something completely unique, guests can take a camel ride across the dunes. 3 rides are currently offered - a very brief 10 minute ‘hop on / hop off’ ride; a short Photo Dune Ride and a longer Sundowner Ride. On the Sundowner Ride, guests ride out to a designated spot, where a table with drinks and snacks have been set up, and after sunset the riders decide whether to go back to the camp on the camels or by vehicle.

The camp has 10 Meru-styled thatched and canvas chalets, with en-suite bathrooms, showers and overhead fans. The interiors are simple yet comfortable, and have solar-powered lighting. A staircase leading up to the flat rooftop above the bathroom provides the ideal setting to sleep under the stars on a provided bedroll.

Each chalet is elevated on a wooden deck with double glass doors on the front, to allow for a maximum view over the desert landscape.
