Holiday Title: Highlights of Zambia

Passengers: 2 Adults

Day 1

Upon arrival at Lusaka International Airport you will be met by our representative and assisted with Immigration and Customs procedures. You will then be directed to the domestic check-in counters for your flight to Mfuwe in the South Luangwa. The flight will take just over an hour.

ProFlight (Light Aircraft): Fly from Lusaka Intl (LUN) to Mfuwe (MFU) - arrival and departure times to be confirmed

On arrival at Mfuwe Airport, you will be met by your guide and you will be transferred by road to the South Luangwa National Park.

Flatdogs is situated adjacent to the main entrance of the Park and is set on the east bank of the Luangwa River, nestled under shady trees. The camp itself is usually full of game - elephants wander through most evenings, giraffe are never far away, and bushbuck hide in the shady bushes, seemingly unaware of the human activity around them.

South Luangwa National Park

2 nights at Flatdogs Camp

Day 3

After breakfast, depart for the transfer to your next camp. The journey from Flatdogs to Nkonzi Camp takes you into the Park and along the '05 Road', away from the main game-viewing area and into the very heart of the Park itself.

Nkonzi is a small intimate tented camp, set on the dry Mushilashi River deep inside the South Luangwa National Park. Here you will experience the romance of a safari under canvas, enjoy expert safari guiding and get so far off the beaten track you’ll feel like you have the South Luangwa all to yourself. Walking safaris begin and end at camp, while game drives can head north, east, south or west into untouched wildlife habitats.

South Luangwa National Park

4 nights at Nkonzi Camp

Day 7

After breakfast, you will be transferred back to Mfuwe Airport, where you will board your flight to the Lower Zambezi National Park.

ProFlight (Economy Class): Fly from Mfuwe (MFU) to Jeki Airstrip - arrival and departure times to be confirmed

You will be met at the airstrip and transferred to Chongwe Camp - the transfer is quite long, so it is an added 'bonus' game drive! Dotted along the forested riverbanks, Chongwe Camp is surrounded by wild beauty. Set at the confluence of the Chongwe and Zambezi Rivers against a beautiful mountainous backdrop, the camp offers the best views in the Lower Zambezi. During your stay, you can enjoy an impressive variety of safari activities, created for the ultimate exploration of this magnificent African paradise. By land, you can enjoy game drives and walking safaris, or take to the rivers and explore with boat cruises, canoeing safaris and tiger-fishing. Back in camp, the wildlife hide is great for photography, especially rare nocturnal creatures.

A trip to Victoria Falls is certainly memorable. One of the 7 Wonders of the World, the sheer noise of the Falls as they cascade over the edge into the deep gorge is deafening, and the misty clouds of spray, occasionally broken by rainbows, are visible from over 40 km away. The Avani Victoria Falls Resort offers affordable luxury accommodation in an elegant surrounding. Located within the Mosai-Oa-Tunya National Park and a mere 15 minute drive from Livingstone Airport, nature enthusiasts can enjoy watching the zebra graze on the lawns of the hotel. Flatdogs Camp

South Luangwa National Park: 2 Nights

Flatdogs Camp is situated in the South Luangwa National Park, one of the last great wildlife wonders of the world. The Park is just over 9,000 square kilometers of pristine wilderness, and has been visited by wildlife enthusiasts from all over the world since its creation as a National Park in 1972.

Game drives are taken with a fully-qualified guide in 4x4 Toyota Land Cruisers. Most of the vehicles can carry 9 guests but the camp prefers to limit numbers to 6 per vehicle unless larger groups or families prefer to go out together. Between 1st June and 31st October each year (and for a few weeks either side, depending on rainfall) the camp is also able to offer walking safaris. Walks usually last for 3 to 4 hours and are commonly taken in the morning when it's cooler.

Flatdogs is also heavily involved with the local life of Mfuwe village, and guests can take an informal trip into the village to get a taste of local life and to see some of the community projects that the camp work on.

The 6 regular chalet rooms are situated in 3 separate buildings. Each chalet building has a downstairs double room with en-suite bathroom and an upstairs twin/triple room with their own bathroom, just downstairs from the bedroom. The 2 rooms in each building are completely separate with their own facilities, but can be joined through the small kitchen area if a family or groups of friends want to book both rooms.

On the banks of the Luangwa, with the best views in camp, are the 7 luxury en-suite safari tents, and there are an additional 3 standard en-suite safari tents nearby (one overlooking the lagoon and 2 looking out onto the river).

The 2 bedroomed Jackalberry Treehouse is completely separate and private, and built around 3 live African ebony trees with unspoilt views out across a waterhole which is regularly visited by elephant and giraffe. The treehouse is available only during the dry season, from 5th April to 15th November each year. If 4 people stay in the Treehouse, a private vehicle and guide is also included.

The tented 2 bedroom Croc Nest has been set on a deck looking onto the banks of the Luangwa River. Guests staying here will also have a private guide and their own safari vehicle so they can plan their activities depending on their particular interests.

Nkonzi Camp

South Luangwa National Park: 4 Nights

Nkonzi Camp is a beautiful rustic bush camp set deep inside the South Luangwa National Park. The camp is a 45 minute drive from the South Luangwa main gate, set beside the dry Mushilashi River. Surrounded by pristine indigenous woodland and grassy plains, Nkonzi Camp is the perfect location for game viewing activities, and is ideally positioned for stargazing with zero light pollution and panoramic views of the breathtaking African night sky and the milky way that have to be seen to be believed.

Guests eat meals together in a shady grove of mature trees, and the small honesty bar serves beer, soft drinks and selected spirits.

Walking safaris are a speciality here - the all day expeditions begin and end at camp, starting early in the morning and returning in the evening. Unique bush breakfasts, cooked over an open fire in the morning light, are a true highlight of your stay here. The experience of tracking wild animals on foot is a memory that will stay with you forever.

Game drives (both day and night) are also an option, heading in any direction north, east, south or west into untouched wildlife habitats.

The camp has 5 tents and sleeps a maximum of 10 people, ensuring you always receive a personalised safari experience. The comfortable walk-in safari tents each have an en-suite bathroom, wooden framed beds with white cotton bed linen, canvas safari seats and solar lighting. There is a small seating area and storage for all your belongings as well, and each tent has either a double bed or twin bed depending on guest numbers.

The en-suite bathroom has a hot bucket shower with plenty of water, mixed to the temperature you prefer by the attentive staff. Being so deep inside the National Park means the camp is not connected to mains electricity, and therefore relies on solar powered lamps - there are power sockets however for camera batteries so you don't have to worry about not being able to take any photos during your stay here!

The camp is seasonal, and is only open from 1st June until 31st October each year.

Chongwe River Camp

Lower Zambezi National Park: 2 Nights

Chongwe Camp is a tented camp, which is situated on the river bank where the Chongwe and Zambezi rivers meet. Across the Chongwe River is the Lower Zambezi National Park, which offers a pristine wilderness with a wide variety of terrain, and is one of Southern Africa's premier destinations for game viewing.

The Lower Zambezi National Park covers an area of 4,092 square kilometers, and the floodplains, grasslands and tall forests support fantastic game densities. Enormous herds of elephant, some up to 100 strong, are often seen at the river's edge, and pods of hippo rest in the water. 'Island hopping' buffalo and waterbuck are common. Impala are everywhere and kudu, eland, zebra and wildebeest are frequently seen.

The sandy river banks are home to iridescent carmine bee-eater colonies while kingfishers and African skimmers flit above the waters. Predators include leopard, large prides of lion and packs of wild dog.

Chongwe’s impressive variety of safari activities provides the ultimate exploration of this magnificent African paradise. By land, enjoy game drives and walking safaris, or take to the rivers and explore with boat cruises, canoeing safaris and tiger-fishing. Back in camp, the wildlife hide is great for photography, especially rare nocturnal creatures.

Chongwe River Camp has 9 tented rooms, each with en-suite facilities and a private verandah overlooking the river. Sit outside your tent in comfortable lounge chairs and watch the abundant wildlife visiting the banks to drink and graze on the lush grasses.

There is also the Aldiba Suite, which is made up of 2 deluxe en-suite rooms with a lounge/dining area and pool shared between the 2 rooms, making this ideal for families or small groups who want more privacy. In addition, the Cassia Suite is a private luxury tented suite consisting of a canopied lounge and dining area with private plunge pool and fire pit and huge octagonal bedroom - perfect for honeymooners or romantic couples.

Avani Victoria Falls Resort

Victoria Falls - Zambia: 2 Nights

Only a short 2 hour flight from Jo'burg, a trip to Victoria Falls is certainly memorable. One of the 7 Wonders of the World, the sheer noise of the Falls as they cascade over the edge into the deep gorge is deafening, and the misty clouds of spray, occasionally broken by rainbows, are visible from over 40 km away - giving rise to the local name that translates as 'the Smoke that Thunders'.

Ever since the 19th century English explorer David Livingston became the first Westerner to see the Falls, they have held a magical draw for visitors to Africa, and they remain an iconic travel destination that many dream of but few get the chance to visit.

The Falls can be viewed from either the Zambian or the Zimbabwean side, and both offer superb views of the Falls from many viewing points.

A truly spectacular way to view and appreciate the full extent of the Falls is by taking a 'Flight of Angels' helicopter ride over the Falls. Sunset cruises on the Zambezi River are also very popular.

Adrenelin seekers can enjoy bungee jumping, white water rafting and body boarding.

Avani Victoria Falls Resort (formerly the Zambezi Sun) is situated on the fringes of the Zambezi River in the 46 hectare Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Wildlife Park, overlooking the magnificent Victoria Falls. The resort’s biggest draw is its impressive location, just a 5 minute stroll from the Falls, with all guests enjoying free unlimited access to this famous attraction – ranked as one of the Seven Natural Wonders and the world’s largest waterfall.

The hotel stands apart for its natural beauty and vibrant local style. The 46 hectare grounds attract zebras, giraffes, impalas and monkeys. Guests can stroll around the gardens for a wild nature walk, go bird watching, investigate the herb and vegetable garden, or see the worm farm and compost project in action. Familes are most welcome and there are activities especially designed to keep children entertained, including the Happy Hippo Club.

The 212 room hotel features adobe-style architecture, bright mosaics and is characterised by ethnic wall stencils, timber and plaster ceilings. It is constructed in a series of 8 buildings, consisting of the guest rooms, a central pavilion of restaurants and a fabulous convention centre.

The huge free-form swimming pool meanders round a pavilion restaurant and an outdoor bandstand and dance floor. The pool deck is also the scene of more formal occasions such as cocktail receptions and alfresco dining. The restaurant atmosphere is relaxed and casual and provides an extremely enjoyable buffet experience.

Important Travel Information For Zambia

Continued

Medical

You are advised to contact your doctor or clinic around 4-8 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations and to get their professional medical advice regarding travel to Zambia.

To help prevent diarrhoea, avoid tap water – drink only bottled water and use bottled water for tooth brushing, and avoid ice made with tap water – and only eat fruit or vegetables that are cooked or can be peeled.

To help avoid heatstroke, drink plenty of bottled water/fluids, and keep out of the midday sun.

There is no risk of yellow fever in Zambia, so a yellow fever vaccination is NOT required for travellers whose sole destination is Zambia. However, in accordance with International Health Regulations, Zambia requires all travellers over one year of age arriving from a yellow fever risk country, or having been in transit longer than 12 hours at the airport of such a country, to have a yellow fever certificate. These countries include Kenya and Uganda but it is up to the traveller to check the full list here https://nathnacyfzone.org.uk/factsheet/60/yellow-fever-maps

There is a risk of malaria in all areas of Zambia - check with your doctor about suitable antimalarial tablets. Dengue fever can also be transmitted via mosquito bites. Try to avoid mosquito bites wherever possible - wear loose long-sleeved clothing and trousers, and use a repellent on clothing and exposed skin.

Tsetse flies are found throughout some of Zambia's National Parks, especially in the Luangwa Valley and Kafue National Park. There have been some cases of sleeping sickness occurring after a tsetse fly bite, although these are mainly amongst farmers and other locals who have repeated exposure to bites. However, the fly can still deliver a painful bite, so it is advisable to take necessary precautions - don't wear dark colours, especially black and blue (including denim), wear long-sleeved clothing and trousers, and don't walk through bushes during the hottest part of the day.

Languages And Culture

The official language of Zambia is English. Commonly-spoken indigenous languages number over 70 and include Lamba, Kaonde, Tumbuka, Ngoni, Ila,Senga, Chewa, Chibemba, Nsenga Chinyanja, Lunda, Chitonga, Kaonde, Silozi, Nkoya, and Luvale.

We would ask that all travellers are respectful of the local culture as follows:

Homosexuality is illegal in Zambia. Whilst everyone is of course entitled to their own sexual preferences and gender identity, we would advise all clients of the LGBT+ community to refrain from public displays of affection (including kissing and holding hands) and to be as discrete as possible about their relationship.

You should always ask permission before taking anyone’s photograph.

Avoid taking pictures of sensitive sites including power stations, explosives factories, pumping stations, army barracks, government buildings, river junctions, road and rail bridges, the Ndola Oil refinery, mining areas and airports. If in doubt, don’t take pictures.

Book With Confidence

Travel Butlers have 20 years experience of booking travel to Africa and the Indian Ocean for clients from all around the world.  In this time we have supported clients through disruptions caused by numerous unexpected events including natural disasters, localised disease outbreaks and airline cancellations. Nobody can be certain exactly what will happen in the future, however Travel Butlers can offer you peace of mind and flexibility to ensure that you feel confident booking a holiday with us.

Flexibility and peace of mind before you travel

Our team are specialists in travel to Africa and the Indian Ocean, and we are constantly monitoring the changing situation regarding travel to the region. If your trip cannot go ahead due to specific travel restrictions related to Covid-19 then we will get in touch to offer you the choice of the following:

The specific Covid-19 travel restrictions are defined as follows:

We would not normally be able to confirm that your trip cannot proceed due to travel restrictions until a couple of weeks before the start of your trip, however should you want to look at postponing or altering your trip before then we would aim to be as flexible as possible.

If we confirm that your trip is unable to proceed due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, then we will not charge you an amendment fee if you choose to postpone your trip or move it to another destination. We may need to adjust the cost of your trip to reflect the new dates, particularly if those coincide with a more expensive season of travel or higher grade of accommodation. Equally, if the cost of your postponed trip is less, we will reduce the cost accordingly.

You should still take out travel insurance that includes Covid-19  to cover you in the event that your trip can go ahead but you are unable to travel due to illness or a change in your personal circumstances. If there are no travel restrictions in place that mean your trip could not go ahead but you need to cancel due to illness or a change in your personal circumstances then our normal terms and conditions would apply. You should ensure that your travel insurance provides adequate cover for cancelling due to illness, including Covid-19, and you may be able to make a claim against your travel insurance depending on the cover offered by your policy.

Support whilst you are away

We offer 24/7 telephone assistance to all our clients whilst they are away, and also have partners in each country that are able to assist with any PCR tests or other issues that might arise during your trip.

If you fall ill whilst you are away, or if your trip is disrupted due to Covid-19 whilst you are travelling, then our experienced team will be on hand to assist you in whatever way you need.  You would need to pay any additional costs incurred due to illness or travel disruption whilst you are away, however you may be able reclaim these expenses on your travel insurance depending on the cover offered by your policy.  Travel Butlers will be able to assist by providing supporting documentation for your claim.

Financial protection for your Travel Butlers holiday

All of the holidays we sell are 100% financially protected through our ATOL and ABTOT bonding so your money is in safe hands when you book a Travel Butlers holiday. Furthermore, our business is well positioned to navigate through the challenges which the travel industry is currently facing.

Please read our Terms and Conditions for more information.

Finding suitable travel insurance that covers Covid-19

You can now get insurance that offers cover for disruption related to Covid-19, and these policies could include cover for:

Not all policies offer this kind of cover, not necessarily even all policies from the same provider, so you should ensure you check the policy details carefully before buying your insurance.

You can read more about choosing suitable travel insurance in the FCDO guide to travel insurance.
