The Moremi Game Reserve covers nearly one-third of the eastern side of the Delta, and is widely considered to be one of the finest game reserves in Southern Africa. It was declared a Reserve in 1963.
Covering an area of nearly 5,000 square kilometers, it is home to a variety of eco-systems, from mopane woodlands and acacia forest, to floodplains and lagoons, offering guests a unique 'wet and dry / land and water based' game viewing experience.
The area has recorded nearly 500 species of bird (from water birds to forest dwellers), and a vast array of other species of wildlife are also present, including buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, wild dog, jackal, impala, and red lechwe.
White rhinos have also been re-introduced in the reserve, making this the only area in the Delta that they can be seen.
Possibly the finest area within the Moremi Game Reserve is Chief's Island, where you will find several of Botswana's top safari camps.
The other main island is the Moremi Tongue at the very eastern end of the Reserve.
The best time to see wildlife in Moremi is between July and October, which are the dry months, as the wildlife congregates around the permanent water sources, making for excellent game viewing in these areas.
Because this is a national Reserve, game drives are restricted to during the daylight hours only, so no night drives are permitted, and walking safaris are also not allowed.
