Chobe National Park

Savuti

The western corner of the Chobe National Park is known as the Savuti (also spelt Savute) area, which covers almost 5,000 square kilometres and is renowned as a prime game viewing area.

LionHuge herds of elephants, buffalos, zebras, impalas, wildebeest and other antelope migrate to the area in the wet season, watched eagerly by prides of lions, and packs of wild dogs and hyena, who are never far behind the herds and always on the look out for a quick snack.

Over 350 bird species have also been recorded in the area.

The Magwikhwe Sand Ridge encircles the western edge of Savuti, and is 100 km long and 20 metres high.

Zebra and foalIt is actually the ancient shoreline of a super-lake that covered much of this northern area of Botswana, and when the lake dried up it left what is now known as the Mababe Depression - a flat endless plain which comes alive with the first rains, turning the harsh dry landscape into a carpet of lush, green grass teeming with thousands of migrating wildlife in search of good grazing.

However, there are also several pans that can hold water long after the rains have subsided, meaning that the wildlife can remain in the area well into the dry season.

Wild dogThe Savuti Marsh is the deepest part of the Mababe Depression, and is the only area to have been filled with water again since the super-lake dried up many many years ago.  The 'culprit' responsible for the flooding is the Savuti Channel, which is infamous for its bizarre history of flooding and then completely drying up.

During the last floods in 1982, the acacia trees that were flourishing all drowned, and when the channel dried up again, the dead trees became eerie skeletons which now dominate the landscape.

As this camp is situated in the Chobe National Park, park regulations prohibit night drives and walking, however game viewing activities are offered in the morning and late afternoons in our open safari game viewing vehicles. All the tents, public areas and swimming pool overlook the adjacent water hole so it is not uncommon to see a wide variety of birds and animals from the privacy of your own tent.
