Franschhoek is in the heart of the Cape Winelands. Only about 30 km south-east of Stellenbosch and an hours drive from Cape Town, Franschhoek can be reached from the N2 by a winding road over the Huguenot Pass, which gives superb views over the valley.
The village is nestled at the bottom of the valley, surrounded by rolling mountains, and is arguably one of the most prettiest villages in South Africa.
The main street is home to many excellent restaurants, and no fewer than 8 feature in the country's Top 100, quite deservedly earning the town the reputation of being South Africa's 'Food and Wine Capital'.
There's a menu here for every taste, and every pocket.

The History of Franschhoek
The Huguenot Memorial Museum and Monument is a reminder of the French Protestant Huguenots who fled to the area in the 17th century from France when they were persecuted for their faith by the Catholic Church.
The refugees, some of whom came from wine growing regions in France, were eager to create a new life, and their combined knowledge of viniculture, wine and brandy making was the start of the flourishing wine producing industry we know today.
The central feature of the Huguenot Memorial is a female figure holding a Bible in her right hand, and a broken chain in her left - symbolizing the freedom of religion.
Many of the residents of Franschhoek today are descendents from this group of people, and the French influence in Franschhoek is still very prominent, with many restaurants specialising in French style cuisine.
Other activities
Other activities that visitors can enjoy including walking trails, hiking, mountain biking and cycling, horse-riding, fly-fishing and golf. Chocolate lovers will adore the Huguenot Chocolate Factory. For the more adventurous, paragliding offers a stunning bird's eye view of the area. Or simply ample among an array of art shops, galleries and specialist stores that grace the village centre.
